Mapeza seeks maximum points

HARARE - FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza says they are targeting maximum points against Flame Lily at Lafarge this afternoon in order to maintain pressure on Castle Lager Premiership log-leaders Chicken Inn.

The Zvishavane-based side currently occupy second place on the log table with 52 points, two behind the Gamecocks.

Platinum are obviously praying that Chicken Inn drop points this afternoon when they take on Tsholotsho at White City Stadium.

Mapeza said his side has since put behind their defeat to Highlanders in the NetOne Easycall Cup at the weekend and are now focused purely on the prison wardens.

The platinum miners were knocked out of the eight-team tournament after Knox Mutizwa scored in the dying stages of the game to ensure Highlanders progress to the next round.

“It was painful losing but I believe we have the character to move on and shift focus on the future. The players are much aware that the team will now concentrate on the league title race,” Mapeza told the Daily News yesterday.

“We will need enthusiasm, and we will have to be focused for the match from a mental point of view as best as possible. Our target is to win our remaining matches and see what happens at the end of the season.

“We don’t want to give ourselves unnecessary pressure. We want to treat each game as it comes. As FC Platinum we are not thinking about the league title. What we are doing is concentrating on doing well in our remaining three matches.”

Mapeza reckons Flame Lily will not be easy given the fact that they are fighting relegation.

“It will definitely not be an easy match. Remember these guys are fighting relegation and they would do all they can to win. And the fact that they are playing at home will also motivate them to do well.”

FC Platinum are enjoying one of their finest seasons in recent times, with expectations of a top four finish replaced with a belief that they can manage the incredible feat of winning the title having struggled at the start of the season.
