Nyahora, Matende win Old Mutual Mountain Run

VUMBA - Rutendo Nyahora and Millen Matende won the Old Mutual Mountain Run Half Marathon in the women’s and men’s categories respectively after a gruelling race.

The race was more difficult this year after the organisers decided to migrate the event from Leopard Rock Hotel to Vumba Botanical Gardens.

Matende came home in 1:15:00 which was 10 minutes slower than last year’s winner Elijah Mabhunu’s 1:05:15 with in-form Kelvin Pangiso second in 1:16:00 while Jonathan Chinyoka was third in 1:17:08.

Nyahora, who came in as the defending champion, successfully retained her crown for the third year running in 1:26:55 which was nine minutes slower than last year’s 1:17:17.

Constance Nyasango was second with her sister-in-law Faith Nyasango a close third in another dominant display by the trio.

There were problems in the 10km race as a tapestry of side roads and poor planning had some athletes getting so lost.

Old Mutual Zimbabwe Group Chief Executive Officer Jonas Mushosho made a public apology for the mess but did not reveal how they finally settled for the winner in the melee.

“In the 10 kilometre race there were some challenges and we sincerely apologise for that. We hope will however, continue to participate in future,” Mushosho said.

Over 600 athletes took part in the race which raised $3 945 which will be matched by Old Mutual for donation to local environmental protection efforts which are led by Wildlife Environmental Protection Unit (WEPU) in Vumba — an association of environmental organisations operating in the scenic area.
