Carelse-Juul camp unfazed

HARARE - Trevor  Carelse-Juul’s election agent says they are unmoved by threats to appeal against their clearance by the Zifa Electoral Committee by Philip Chiyangwa camp.

Juul was on Friday cleared to stand in the Zifa board elections to be held on December 5, but the decision immediately sparked a reaction from Chiyangwa’s election agent Eddie Chivero, who said they would approach the Zifa Appeals Committee.

However, Juul’s election agent Stanley Makombe said they were not concerned with these threats.

“They (Chiyangwa camp) have a legal right to appeal. At the end of the day, everything has to conform to the laws,” said Makombe.

“They are not convinced the Electoral Committee is not acting in conformity with the laws of the game and the country.

“We believe they are well within their right and we are not in contestation with that exercise.”

Makombe added: “Our feeling is that they had a plan and it didn’t work. They seemingly want to go back to that plan. They fear Trevor. They feel that if they go into an election against him they will lose.

“So they are trying everything to ensure that he does not enter the race but our papers are in order hence the decision to clear Trevor by the electoral committee.”

The composition of the Zifa Electoral Committee has also been challenged by Hope Chizuzu, who has threatened to go to court unless the elections are stopped.

Chizuzu has given Zifa until Monday to stop the elections or else he will approach the High Court for recourse since there is a precedence that was already set when Justice Bere ruled that the electoral committee was not properly constituted last year.

“It could be correct that there are issues of composition of the electoral committee. All we want is fairness on our candidates,” said Makombe.

“For us, it is good enough that we have been cleared to contest in the elections and all we want is a level playing field.”

If the elections go ahead, Juul and Chiyangwa will have to battle against James Takavada and Leslie Gwindi for local football’s top post.
