Grace confirms presidential bid

HARARE - President Robert Mugabe’s ominous warning to Zanu PF bigwigs on his return from the United Nations a fortnight ago, that no one in the warring ruling party could stand in the way of the wishes of his wife Grace appears to be coming to pass.

As Grace addressed her latest power exhibition show in Rushinga yesterday — amid much pomp, ceremony and embarrassing bootlicking by among others Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko — it became glaringly clearer that no one in the post-congress Zanu PF could stop her if she continued to dream about succeeding her frail nonagenarian husband.

In fact, the controversial First Lady gave one of her clearest hints to date that she could be going for it, saying that she was mounting her rallies because she did not want to wait until the 2018 elections, as people would then be entitled to ask her where she would have been all along — a statement that insiders said exposed her presidential ambitions. And as if to confirm that even Mphoko — who is senior to her, at least on paper — is not at her level, Grace went to the Mashonaland Central rally in a “presidential convoy” of two helicopters, while the dour VP hotfooted his way there by road, in addition to once again being humiliated by being asked to introduce his supposed junior to the crowds.

Grace Mugabe addressing delegates at the Rushinga rally.

Seemingly, to save face, Mphoko offered an unsolicited and unconvincing explanation to the crowds, saying he was happy to introduce Grace as she was Mugabe’s wife and thus represented the president wherever she went.

“President Mugabe is the centre of power and those that don’t want his leadership can move to the side and proceed to form their own party like (Simba) Makoni and (Dumiso) Dabengwa … now with utmost humility I introduce the First Lady,” the seemingly out of sorts VP said.

The increasingly-influential Grace provided yet another public demonstration of her power when a huge entourage of at least a dozen Cabinet ministers, an estimated 50 legislators and hundreds of other ruling party bigwigs from around the country accompanied her to the Rushinga rally.

Most of the Cabinet ministers and party officials who graced the rally are linked to Zanu PF’s ambitious Young Turks known as the Generation 40 (G40) group — that is said to be led by combative Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere — and which is locked in a bitter power struggle with Mnangagwa and his supporters, while expediently promoting Grace.

And as usual, the cash-strapped Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) was once again there to cover the rally live — a costly exercise that is usually reserved for her long-ruling husband, and for which the public broadcaster and its reporter Judith Makwanya unsurprisingly got high praise from the “Unconquerable”, while the independent media were excoriated.

Grace also used the occasion to blast unnamed ambitious veterans of the country’s liberation struggle, saying their participation in the gruelling war of independence was not a ticket for them to do as they pleased, as they were not the only ones to fight for Zimbabwe’s freedom.

“There are some who think that because they fought in the war to liberate the country, their war credentials give them the right to do what they want. Are you the only one who fought in that war?

“We will end up asking you if anybody forced you to join the war because there are many others who also went there. We all did, as our parents, brothers and sisters played their part as well” Grace said.

The First Lady, 50, did not take part in the liberation struggle which many in the post-congress Zanu PF regard as a must for anyone who wants to be president of the party and country. The country’s meddling and politically-influential security chiefs have also made it clear in the past that they will not salute anyone without strong liberation credentials.

In 2002, the then Defence Forces Commander, the late Vitalis Zvinavashe, issued a chilling televised statement, pointedly warning citizens against voting for anyone other than Mugabe.

“Let it be known that the highest office in the land is a straight jacket whose occupant is expected to observe the objectives of the liberation struggle,” Zvinavashe said in his widely-condemned statement.

Grace said former Vice President Joice Mujuru was expelled from Zanu PF for assuming that her liberation struggle credentials were enough for her to become president.

But War Veterans minister Chris Mutsvangwa recently slammed the G40 that is strongly linked to Grace, saying war veterans were on high alert to quash the ambitions of the Young Turks.

“Some say when I give you food I’m buying your votes but should I let people starve because of that. I don’t care and will continue to do that until 2018.

“Better you vote me after giving you something than nothing as other parties do. When they come towards elections chase them away. This province is a no go area. It is a one-party state here,” Grace also said at yesterday’s rally.

Do it Dr. Amai Mugabe. You will battle it out with Dr. Amai Mujuru. The men have stayed there for so long, its time now for 'mama'. The voters will decide. Don't misunderstand me my dear friends particularly the brothers I live with here in Maun Botswana such as Raphael, Ichichi, Tj, Chris, Looney etc.

Because the claim of having fought for the liberation of Zimbabwe was and is still being mischieviously used to plunder and loot Zimbabwe`s natural resources by those in leadership at the detriment of the whole nation. That the words were said by Grace whose aims and intentions we very well know they may not have the intended effects to the targetted people.

The writing is on the wall but unfortunately this woman is illiterate and can not read it . The writing reads all people are very angry about anything called zanu worse if it has to do with Mugabe and his wife bcoz these two people are evil . That is what the writing on the wall is saying , But bcoz Grace stomach is always full of sikafu she is mistaking that everyone is like that . people I mean normal ones all are very cross about zanu and they are just waiting for 2018 to vent their angry on this political party led by satan . Let her just run around the country just like nkuku yena suthile sikhafu bcoz beyond 2018 she will be no more just like that exwife of the top soldier who wanted to test the blood of a white farmer ,remember her she is finished today i think she is surviving by brewing kachasu and sikokiyana whereever she is, all mawala finished . i wonder why this typist can not learn from her .Addressing bused crowds who are hungry and not interest in the shiite being said to them has totally deceived the typist and she is even dreaming of being president demity !!!! HOZA 2018 Grace will be removed after that she will go and live along Mukuvisi river bcoz all stolen properties she boasts of will be taken away from her and vagrants will have a field day on her .

Diibulaanyika - 15 October 2015

let's be honest guys. who in zanu pf can challenge this woman? everyone is dead scared. unless someone from zanu pf of people first challenge her, she will certainly take over nyanga while people watch and comment behind keyboards like most are. tsvangirai agara mutete panyaya dze politics. come 2018, we will wake up with a lady president from njanja. hapana anoti pwetere pana mhamha ava.

zvirozviyedzwa - 15 October 2015

This is a sorry sight. It is obvious that Grace is delivering ZanuPF back to Joyce Mujuru.Mnangagwa had misread the plot and now the reality is dawning on all those dimwits. This is the end of ZanuPF and Mugabe.

Kufandada - 15 October 2015

Oooh what a shame to our smartly icons of the liberation struggle. They used to say Zimbabwe will never be ruled by a none gun carring member, but today what is this that is happening? Can Mnangagwa, Chinotimba, Mutsvangwa,Mutasa, Mujuru, Sibanda J etc answer me on this one? War vets you are now being told to be silent by a mere typist oooh shame Mbuya Nehanda,Chaminuka,Sekuru Kaguvi,Rekayi Tangwena is this what sacrifised your life for? Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana let you flesh rise up and protect us.

Chemical Solution - 16 October 2015

Wake up all who don't want change or rather leave the country! today we don't need your negative comments. Zimbabwe has to change now, people are suffering on a daily basis, parents cant pay schools fees, children are not even going to school, companies are closing, workers being laid off. Business is at a halt and someone does not want change. Go to hell!! and stay there. Mujuru, Tsvangirai, Biti , Dabengwa, Makoni, and the rest please; Or at least somebody! we will give full support, bring us change; Zimbabweans are still being oppressed.

zuruvi - 16 October 2015

Guys I support Grace for one reason. All these filthy people surrounding our good president Mugabe were quite for 35 years, by that, All war veterans demonstrated that they are incapable of leading the nation. Their time yakakwana, Mugabe ruled on their behalf, now we want someone young and progressive. kkkkkk I don't mean Gire NOOO!. Once Gire is given the jersey for presidency, ZANU is dead and she will also be soft and easy to remove from presidency through impeachment in parliament or other lawful means and a real leader will take over. I know she has no suuport but For this sake lets all please support Gire for presidency.

Ndazvitaua - 16 October 2015

Go on Gushungo.I am so happy with the pitch given by Dr Grace Mugabe.Factions will destroy ZanuPF and the centre of power is Mugabe and his wife. She must be the President of ZanuPF because that is what they deserve.Grace will give it 10 years by then Robert Mugabe junior who is training to become a solder will be old enough to take over as President.

Kufandada - 16 October 2015

Grace sees nothing wrong with buying votes - whatever she gives she loots even more! "Hazvina basa kana ndikakutenga ukandivhotera its okay. It is better to vote for someone who gives you something than someone who does not," Grace Mugabe argued. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Grace is First Lady and yet she is already behaving as if she is president already, the whiff of absolute tyrannical power has her giddy and her knees knocking! She and her husband are not Bill Gates or Henry Ford so where is she getting the millions of dollars she has spent buying all these goodies she has dished out at her rallies? This is a rhetorical question, the people know the answer already – corruption! In 2012 alone President Mugabe earned $2 billion from his share of the looting going on in Marange according to an Africa Partnership Canada report. The same year Minister of Finance Tendai Bitit received a mere trifle $400 million in tax revenue from Marange and this has since dried up to nothing since the end of the GNU. So Madam what you are giving away at your rallies is but a tiny fraction of what you have looted from the nation. The people of Zimbabwe are not stupid, they know they are being short changed and hence the reason why Zanu PF has had to resort to more drastic measures such as intimidation, harassment, beating and even murder and not just vote-buying to stay in power. If Grace Mugabe is going to rely solely on goodies to buy the people's vote in 2018 then she will need a fleet of 100 lories per province delivering daily for month at least to fool the people of Zimbabwe. With unemployment at 90% and millions now living in abject poverty it will take a lot of goodies to convince them that Grace Mugabe will make a good president in a free, fair and credible election! - See more at: http://bulawayo24.com/index-id-opinion-sc-columnist-byo-75859.html#sthash.GLPfGAtU.dpuf

carson macate - 16 October 2015

Dr Grace Mugabe going for Presidency is the best news I have heard for a very long time. I say this because not only is she stupid but she also lacks even the most basic political skills. Don't stand in her way, let her take it because once she is in power I know with absolute certainty that she will never ever control the situation and there will be a big rebellion and she will be out. Dr Grace Mugabe it might be in your best interests to study history and see what happened to the former Romanian President, Nicolai Ceausescu when he ignored the aspirations and feelings of the masses.

Dr. Amai The First Lady, Mother of the Nation, Grace Mugabe. Dr. Amai our Liberator and War Vet and possible Future Mother of our beloved Nation Zimbabwe in a different capacity , Teurai Ropa Joyce Mujuru. When people throw STONES at you, it is because you are a good TREE full of good FRUITS. They see a lot of HARVEST in you. Do not go down to their LEVEL by throwing back the same STONES. The democratic leadership should come together and work together to liberate the country from this current state we are in where by elections are only held to confirm the same leader who is imposed by those in the politburo. Russian style of elections, No. Zimbabweans we are more proud than that. We want to choose our leaders the American style in the future not the politburo taking the place of the people. Democratic leadership is fully aware of this game. There are democratic parties that are still using the ZANU WAY of selecting leadership or ways to remain in power instead of allowing the people the opportunity to keep you in power. Creation of structures to keep one in power should end if Democratic forces are to be truely democratic. The very sense of eulogising leaders should end start believing that anybody can lead when chosen by the people first and then your silly structures designed to bootlick all the time. Without fully exposing ZANU WAYS we will fall in the same dilemma with whoever is going to be the next leader. Thanks somebody for highlighting that RGM was the CEO not Mai Mujuru. She was merely dancing to the tune of the Choir Master. If you criticise the Choir Master you risk being fired as was the case. She fully understands the weaknesses of the CEO hence calling her Battallion the DEMOCRATS meaning democracy was non existent in the so called Revolutionary Party hijacked by the few at the expense of the whole nation hence the phrase PEOPLE FIRST something they fraught for but quickly thrown out through the window by a few in the ZANU PF POLITIBURO ignoring the PEOPLE FIRST mantra. Mai Mujuru knows the answers to why Zimbabwe is in what it is today. Look east policy how did we lower ourselves to such levels as a proud nation. Zimbabwe is big enough to look EVERYWHERE and compete. THE UNIFICATION OF DEMOCRATIC FORCES IS THE ANSWER TO OUR SITUATION AND BALANCE THE DEBATE. NO DEDATE IS = to ONE PARTY STATE. NORTH KOREA.
