Makaza targets Legends marathon

HARARE - 2015 Two Oceans Marathon runner-up Collen Makaza will be satisfied with nothing short of victory when he lines up for the third edition of the Legends’ Ultramarathon in East London, South Africa today.

Makaza is taking part at the 68km race, which has attracted more than two thousand runners.

Although he did not compete in the Legends Marathon 2014 due to his participation at the IAU World 50km Final in Doha, Qatar, he is an experienced Ultra Marathoner who is aiming to break records.

“I will try to reclaim my tittle of 2013 and I’m still record holder of this race,” Makaza told the Daily News from South Africa yesterday.

“I have been training for the past three months for this race and I can say I am confident I will win tomorrow (today).”

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services employee comes into the race having put up an incredible performance at the Cape Town marathon.

The founder of the Harare to Chitungwiza, Mr Pace Marathon finished second, two minutes behind winner Motlokoa Nkhabutlane who crossed the line in 3 hours 10 minutes and 27 seconds.

For his efforts, he received R125 000 but most importantly a moment to savour when he was embraced by legendary Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie at the finish line.

Last year’s event of the 68km race was won Zimbabwean athlete Marco Mambo, followed by South Africans Elias Mabona and Peter Muthumbi in the third place.
