Congo President seeks third term

BRAZAVILLE - Congo-Brazzaville's leader has said he will hold a referendum on whether to change the constitution to allow him to stand for a controversial third term.

"I decided to give the people a direct voice," said President Denis Sassou Nguesso, 72, who has ruled for more than 30 of the past 35 years.

The proposals would allow candidates aged over 70 to run for office and scrap the two-term limit.

No date was given for the referendum, but elections are due next year.

BBC Africa's Mamadou Moussa Ba says the main opposition coalition is against the move, saying it could destabilise the country. It also complains that it will not have the same access to the media to voice concerns.

It boycotted what President Sassou Nguesso called a "national dialogue" in July, when about 400 representatives of political groups, trade unions, war veterans as well as traditional and religious leaders were invited to discuss the constitutional amendments.

The forum was described as a "constitutional coup" by the president's critics.

What is wrong with these people? What is the point of having the constitution if you will just bastadise it every two minutes? What sort of a leader serves for a +/-decade and still has not thought about grooming others to take over? Lack of vision from these African leaders that's what...even China where there is no opposition politics allowed know that you have to renew your leadership every 10yrs

African leaders - Shame on you. What makes you think you have the right to rule forever. You pretend to have the people at heart but all you are doing is destroy our lives. You are worse than the colonialist - suppressing your own people, enriching yourselves, senselessly destroying our beautiful continent. At least the white man was a foreigner oppressing us, but you (African leaders) - suppressing your own?? Shame shame shame. You are dragging Africa behind while other continent are prospering and you unashamedly hide behind stale issues like "sanctions" some of which are just figments of your imaginations. Wake Up African leaders and let your young take Africa forward.

Cry Africa Cry. The problem in Africa is that the presidential seat is a source of employement if they leave it they will face the ruthlessness of unemployement facing other ordinary citizens. That's why in Africa there is an uncurable cancer called corruption- those in political office amass wealth through unethical means so as to survive after office. We hear Museveni is singing the same song, Kagame has joined the same choir, today Nguesso has joined as backing vocalist tommorrow another will join again......
