Mugabe threatens independent media

HARARE - President Robert Mugabe yesterday stunned his audience by threatening the country’s fledgling private media, claiming that they had become hate groups that were blowing issues out of proportion.

Speaking at a luncheon hosted for him by the ministry of Local Government after reading the wrong speech when he opened Parliament, the nonagenarian claimed that the media were exaggerating issues just to push sales.

Skirting his embarrassing error earlier in Parliament, and not mentioning a word about the excesses of the opposition-hating State media, Mugabe attacked free speech, further threatening unspecified action.

“Journalists, don’t tell lies. Tell the truth. Ah, vaMugabe vazotya nhingi ah (Mugabe is scared of so and so)…you formulate stories so that people can buy your papers chete (only). The journalism that we are experiencing today is not the journalism that we know,” Mugabe said.

“If we begin to take control now, people should not then cry foul. Vanyanya, manyanya (It’s too much. This is getting out of hand),” he added.

“Because you don’t share my politics and I don’t share your politics does not mean we should be enemies. You may criticise me when I’m wrong, sure, but do not give me sins I haven’t committed, thoughts I haven’t thought about,” he said.

Apparently piqued by independent media headlines to the effect that his ruling Zanu PF was rattled by former Vice President Joice Mujuru’s presidential bid, Mugabe said: “Ah vari kutya nhingi, vari kuzotya ivava Mai Mujuru ava. Vakakanganisa tikavadzinga, ikozvino vava kuvaisa pamusoro, vozovati varikurwisaniswa navaMugabe, nechibhakera changu ichi? (They say I’m scared of Mujuru. She messed up and we fired her. They say I’m scared of her. Could that be possible with this fist?)” Mugabe said.
