Kasukuwere purges Mnangagwa allies

HARARE - Zanu PF is burning in Mashonaland Central as political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere is purging party officials linked to Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Kasukuwere is accused by some senior party officials in the province — where he is now the most senior member — of using his office to settle petty political scores.

Already, several legislators could be suspended from the province after Kasukuwere’s half brother Dickson Mafios, who is the party interim provincial chairperson, moved to have them shown the exit door on untested allegations that they belong to the Joice Mujuru faction.

This is despite the fact that First Lady Grace Mugabe has already implored party members to stop the witch hunts.

Zanu PF youth leader for Mashonaland Central Godfrey Tsenengamu, an avid backer of Mnangagwa, was removed in a vote of no confidence last week and is reportedly fighting the move.

Contacted for comment on his pending suspension that could be discussed by the party top hierarchy, Tsenengamu, who led the crusade against Mujuru, referred questions to Mafios and the party’s secretary for youths Pupurayi Togarepi.

Togarepi professed ignorance on the expulsion of some youths in Mashonaland Central.

“That process comes from the youth leader; I am the only one who handles those matters. I was with the political commissar, who is the political leader in Mashonaland Central and he never mentioned that,” said Togarepi.

Yesterday, Mafios said he does not discuss such matters with the media.

“Where did you get that? The person who tells you such things should give you the full and correct details.”

Meanwhile, an MP who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation said Kasukuwere must be part of the discussions when the politburo meets today.

“He is abusing his role as the political commissar and I hope on Wednesday this issue will be tabled and ironed out. We have no other recourse but the politburo,” the Zanu PF official said.

Kasukuwere, a self-confessed political thug, stands accused of exhibiting unbridled ambition despite the fact that he is a “junior cadre”.

His rivals have indicated in a social media group chat seen by the Daily News that they intended to push for a vote of no confidence on the belligerent Local Government minister.

Kasukuwere is also accused of fanning enmity between Grace, and Mnangagwa.

Mashonaland Central minister of State Martin Dinha, who was last week interrogated by police on abuse of office charges, could be thrown into prison if found guilty, notwithstanding the fact that he is an ally of Mnangagwa and a “shameless bootlicker” of Grace.

The resident minister will answer to charges of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer, bribery and money laundering on October 19.

His lawyer Tapson Dzvetero claimed that Dinha is being persecuted because of differences with some Zanu PF officials in the province.

“My client believes that these are politically trumped-up charges and the complaints were lodged by people seeking political mileage,” said Dzvetero.
