'Zambezi News' lights up Mauritius

MAURITIUS - Zambezi News, a parody of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), left audience in stitches at the ongoing MultiChoice Content Extravaganza on Friday night.

The three-man Zambezi News cast of  Samm “Comrade Fatso” Monro, Michael K and Outspoken, which has just returned  from a tour of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, served a dish of satire that included an imaginary  “Patriotism spray (deodorant) that should not to be sold to children with access to dual citizenship or black Zimbabweans with white tendencies.”

Zambezi News also triggered more laughter when they unleashed the minister of Impending Projects who bragged about his ability to remain in power despite his wretched delivery record. The dodo bird — an extinct species of a flightless bird that was once native to Mauritius — did not escape Zambezi News’ satirical treatment along with the divisive issue of gay rights.

In an interview after their performance, Comrade Fatso revealed that Zambezi News’ material would debut on Zambezi Magic in October.

“We have done three seasons and some of our material will start appearing on DStv in October. We are very excited by this,” he told the Daily News on Sunday.

The Zambezi News trio shared the stage with Ugandan comedian Salvador (Patrick Idringi Vieira) who took to the stage to share mind-blowing jokes about African lifestyle during an event hosted by DStv channels Zambezi Magic and Maisha Magic East.

Zambezi Magic Head Addiel Dzinoreva gave a preview of upcoming content for the channel (DStv 160), including returns for Generations, Isidingo and Our Perfect Wedding as well as exciting shows like the Zimbabwean show Tonight With Zororo.

Dzinoreva also expressed the readiness of his channel to work with the best filmmakers from the southern African region, as well as promising more African music and locally-produced comedy content.

The five-day MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase, which ends today (Saturday), has seen a host of DStv’s biggest channels, including Sony, SuperSport, Zee World, A+E, Disney, MTV Base, BET, Comedy Central, BBC and M-Net previewing their latest and greatest content, soon to be seen across the video entertainment services provider’s platforms.
