Zim Model Awards moved to Saturday

HARARE - Zimbabwe Model Awards organiser Mercy Mushaninga says the inaugural edition, which was scheduled for last weekend, will now take place on Saturday at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Mushaninga claimed that the first edition of the Zimbabwe Model Awards was postponed because it clashed with another event.

“The date has been moved to August 29 this week because we didn’t want to compete with a Rebecca Malope show that was supposed to have taken place last weekend,” said the Zimbabwe Model Awards organiser

Interestingly, this weekend Harare will also host the Babyface-Toni Braxton show at the Borrowdale Race Course and Nigerian star Davido’s gig at Belgravia Sports Club but Mushaninga insisted that she was not worried by the counter attractions.

“Yes I understand that there are other gigs but the models and people in the modelling industry are more excited about awards. Even their families are excited. What they will do is to attend the awards first, then attend the concerts afterwards, so I am confident that we will attract a huge crowd,” she said.

Despite Mushaninga’s optimism, some sceptics have predicted a low key event due to poor funding.

One nominee who declined to be named, citing conflict of interest, said the Zimbabwe Model Awards organisers were keeping nominees and stakeholders in the dark.

“I read in the press that I had been nominated, and there has not been any word since then. I was looking forward to them as they are a first. I surely hope that they will happen as they are something big for the modelling industry,” she said.
