Hellen Costa fires warning shots

HARARE - Ms Zimbabwe Fitness Figure title holder Hellen Costa, pictured, is looking forward to add another title when she takes part in the inaugural IBFF Zimbabwe Classic this evening at Reps Theatre.

The two-time Fitness Figure champion hopes the female athletes will turn up in large numbers unlike previous contests that have been hit by apathy.

“I’m hoping the turnout will be good on competitions especially women. I hope it will be a show of international standards and I intend to try and present international standards too,” Costa told the Daily News yesterday.

“I’m also hoping everything is transparent in the hope of making the sport bigger and trying to ensure ethical conduct.”

Meanwhile, the male contest has been hit by withdrawals after some of the country’s seasoned campaigners like Mr Zimbabwe Champion Chienderamwano, Mr Ironman Isaac Chimuchenga opting to participate in the Botswana Classic which is on tonight in Gaborone.

Another top bodybuilder Vincent Kandiyero, who was the Ironman first runner-up, is still recovering from an appendix operation done in January and will not be part of the cast at Reps Theatre tonight.

Despite the withdrawals, contest organiser Victor Hungwe said the show would serve as a platform for the up and coming bodybuilders.

“We are not really much worried about the seasoned athletes on the male side of things because we are trying to give new athletes the platform to showcase their talents,” he said.

“It’s good for the seasoned males who have gone down to Botswana and it’s also good for those athletes who are going to get the opportunity to flex their muscles here as well because at the end of the day it’s about development of the sport and we are all fighting for the same cause.”
