Magaya donates football kits

MUTARAE - Prophetic Healing Deliverance Ministries (PHD) founder Walter Magaya has donated football kits to all 10 participating boys’ teams at the 13th edition of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games in Mutare.

On top of that, Magaya also handed a football kit to Manicaland girls’ team.

Magaya’s Northern Region Division One football side Yadah Gunners’ goalkeepers’ coach Zwanai Kawadza handed over the kits to the respective provinces.

Kawadza said Magaya’s love for the sport was a source of inspiration to a growing number of young players.

Magaya has on various occasions bailed out the bankrupt Zimbabwe Football Association by sponsoring both the male and female national football teams’ continental trips.

Kawadza said he had approached Magaya specifically with a request for Manicaland, for which he is a past coach, but the PHD founder decided to extend his help to all participating teams.

Manicaland youth games’ general manager James Mwonzora was elated with the donation.

"I would like to thank the prophet for remembering us. These days it is very rare to find donations from the corporate world,” Mwonzora said.

Meanwhile, the commencement of most games was delayed due to venue unpreparedness. Where venues were ready, poor participant turnout spoiled the prestigious event.

Athletics venue, Sakubva Stadium, had no track markings forcing the postponement of the games to today.

Athletics competition director for the youth games Titus Madzingo confirmed the postponement.

“Yes we could have started today (yesterday) as you see track markings had not been done that is what we are doing for the entire day (yesterday) but we are confident that everything will be ready,” Madzingo said.

Tennis is the most affected and competition among eligible athletes could have ended today.

Only five provinces had fielded players but three had depleted teams forcing an avalanche of walk-overs.

Only Harare and Manicaland provinces are set to compete for honours.

Basketball was also hit hard by low turnout forcing organisers to abandon their pool format for a round robin competition. Only six provinces sent through boys teams while five have girls teams.
