Kersten finishes strongly in Germany

HARARE - A solid final round of 72 propelled Falcon College student Justin Kersten to a respectable eighth place finish at the RB Global Junior Golf Tournament in Germany yesterday.

Kersten shot four birdies and an equal number of bogeys to register a composed even par round which saw him climb 15 places up the individual standings.

The 2014 British Junior Open Zimbabwe representative had earlier signed for cards of 75 and 80 that saw him tied at 23.

But the budding junior golfer who in March this year placed eighth at the Curro SA Juniors International in South Africa found his mojo on the final day of a tough 15-hole course to take his gross score for the tournament to 11-over-par 227.

Denmark’s Marcus Helligkilde won the boys’ section of the tournament after concluding with an overall one-under-par following cards of 73, 72, 70 over three days of competition.

Zimbabwe’s other representatives, Irvine Nembaware and Tarisiro Fundira, found the going tough at the RB Global Junior Golf Tournament.

Nembaware closed at number 78 after shooting a final round 92 to settle for a gross score of 60-over-par 276 at the conclusion of 54 Hole individual stroke play tournament.

Fundira also struggled on the Heidelberg-Lobenfeld Golf Club course.

The St John’s College student closed on number 79 after shooting rounds of 99, 110 and 97 for a gross score of 90-over-par 306.

The tournament played host to at least 120 participants from over 30 countries.

It offered an opportunity for junior golfers to gain amateur world ranking points

Apart from the championship carrying valuable amateur world ranking points, it also presented an opportunity for the trio to measure their standard of junior golf against some of the world’s emerging golf stars.
