Is this Barca side the best ever?

JOHANESBURG - On Tuesday, Barcelona collected their fourth (Uefa Super Cup) silverware on the trot having won a domestic treble last season.

Although they achieved Tuesday’s task the hard way, there seems no stopping Luis Enrique’s swashbuckling side from sweeping anything on offer.

But they were given a scare, a big scare! Cruising after racing to a 4-1 lead midway through the second half, Sevilla gave the Catalonia side something to ponder about when they scored three quick goals to force the tie into extra time.

And even after Barca had scored the fifth goal in extra time, Sevilla missed two glaring opportunities that could have sealed a famous win but as it would be, the Spanish champions cantered to yet another silverware.

And again the architects of their success on Tuesday were the same old ‘‘culprits’’. In the absence of Neymar, who is suffering from mumps, Lionel Messi scored two scintillating free kicks and the busy Luis Suarez was at the centre of the other goals.

The three literally carried Barcelona to a clean sweep last season and with the entire triumvirate showing an appetite for more success, this spells trouble for other teams.

The trio are undoubtedly the best three striking players on the globe as we speak and them playing for the same club means other teams can only watch in awe.

Messi, Neymar and Suárez ended last season with a combined total of 122 goals, making them the highest scoring attacking threesome in Spanish football history.

Part of their success is derived from the fact that they are all quick on the ball, play for each other and are deadly in front of goal.

Talk at the end of last season was whether the trio is the best attacking combination that ever existed.

There were few, if any dissenting views to that notion but after Tuesday’s success, talk shifted to whether this Barcelona side is the best club the world has ever seen.

Big question; but who can dispute that? Of course it is always difficult to compare teams or players from different eras.

The same argument has been advanced when questions are raised on who is the best player of all time among Pele, Maradona or Messi?

Because the three played in different eras meaning different techniques, no one has ever come up with a conclusive answer.

The same scenario might also be advanced when people ask whether this Barcelona side is the best club that ever existed.

I personally, have little doubt that with the telepathic understanding of Messi, Neymar and Suarez — this Barca side stands there among one of the best clubs ever to grace mother earth.

They got started last season and it looks like they will only get better this season much as most teams will try to stop them. On paper they look unbeatable but football is a funny game.

If you take it for granted, it has a way of kicking you in the backside. But having said that, I still think this Barcelona side is going to dominate world football for years to come.

They just stand out as the best-assembled side in the modern era.
