ZRU hails Old Mutual

HARARE - Zimbabwe Rugby Union chief executive Colleen De Jong has commended the union’s partnership with Old Mutual saying it is going a long way in transforming junior rugby development in the country.

At least 250 budding rugby players will converge for the inaugural Old Mutual National Inter-Community XV’s Cup Tournament today at Eaglesvale School.

The 12-team provincial tournament draws participants from Harare, Bulawayo, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland West.

The National Inter-Community XV’s Cup will be played on a round robin basis and will also feature a girls’ match pitting Mashonaland East and Harare.

“Twelve provincial teams with more than 250 participants at Under-14, U16 and U18 level will take part,” said De Jong.

“We are very excited that the first ever national community development tournament is being held this weekend.

“It is the culmination of almost two years of our partnership with Old Mutual.

“The programme continues to grow numbers and skill levels and we are delighted to share Old Mutual’s vision to help each individual reach their potential through the World Rugby sanctioned Get into Rugby Programme.”

The National Inter-Community Cup will be played  over 35 minutes while rolling substitutions will be permitted.

Insurance and property giant Old Mutual are currently the sponsors of the Junior Sables sides and bankrolled their participation in the annual Coca-Cola Craven tournament staged last month.
