Zim artists nominated for continental awards

HARARE - Hollywood actors Tongayi Chirisa and Danai Gurira are among several Zimbabwean artists in the running for the African Entertainment Awards to be held in the United States of America on October 31.

The other nominated Zimbabwean artists are Brian Soko who produced Beyoncé’s song Drunken in love, songbirds Tinashe Kachingwe and Selmor Mtukudzi, comedian Comrade Fatso, rapper Tehn Diamond, Nikki Minaj’s designer Farai Simoyi, Bonnie Deuschle, as well as Takesure Zamar Ncube.

In the awards that seek to celebrate African talent on the continent and in the Diaspora, Tinashe and Selmor have been nominated in the Hottest Female Single of The Year category for the songs 2 On and Nguva Yangu respectively. Fashion designer Simoyi, who has worked with international celebrities Beyoncé and Minaj, has fittingly been nominated under the Female Fashion Designer category while Tehn Diamond is in the running for the Best Hip-Hop Artist and Song award thanks to the hit song “Happy”.

Comrade Fatso, whose Zambezi Express comedy series has attracted international attention, will battle it out with South African Trevor Noah and Ugandan Anne Kansiime in the Best Comedian category.

The continental awards have also recognised rising gospel artiste Ncube as well as veteran gospel singer Deuschle who are both in the running for the Best Gospel Group award. Ncube, who leads the popular Worship Addicts, was nominated on the strength of his performance of the song “Kuregerera in advance” backed by South Africa’s Joyous Celebration.
