Black Opal Face of Zim on tonight

HARARE - The third edition of Black Opal Face of Zimbabwe (Bofoz) set for the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) tonight, will see 16 ladies battle it out for the $8 000 first prize.

The winner will also walk away with a full year’s supply of Black Opal skincare and cosmetics while the second prize winner will pocket $4 000 in prize money as well as 6 months’ supply of cosmetics. The third prize winner will earn $2 000 and 3 months’ supply of cosmetics.

Votes from the members of the public will constitute 50 percent of the final result, while the judges will decide on the remainder.

What has made tonight’s event more exciting and bigger than the two previous editions, is a high profile entertainment bill that will feature some of the country’s leading entertainers who include Jah Prayzah, Shinsoman, Soul Jah Love and Cynthia Mare.

Chipaz Promotions, who are one of the sponsors of the event, are in charge of the entertainment section of tonight’s event.

Tatenda Mutseyekwa, the director of Yolana Investments that owns the Black Opal licence in Zimbabwe, said Bofoz was gaining popularity because it is not a beauty competition with restrictive entry requirements.

“When you look at the event, it is not a beauty pageant where there are set standards. It has everyone from Chitungwiza to Mandara. It’s a way of showing that our products are for every woman in Zimbabwe.

“We are embracing women in their different shapes and sizes and this is clear from our selection. Unlike beauty pageants that select stick-thin models, we have all women entering. Last year we had a female pastor from Bulawayo as a finalist. Her family and church members rallied behind her,” he said.

The competition is open to any Zimbabwean woman older than 18 years who will be based in the country at least for the next two years regardless of skin shade, height or weight.

The 2013 winner Betty-Gugu Moyo won a trip to New York in addition to prize money while Tendai Farai who won last year used the prize money to set up a lingerie business.
