First Farai turns to God

HARARE - Controversial sungura musician First Farai has joined the bandwagon of musicians flocking to chaar churches hoping to revive their flagging careers.

Farai, who strangely named his latest album Fantastic Farai Ubwada Delicious, told the Daily News that he is now a member of Walter Magaya’s Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries.

“I need deliverance in my life. My life has not been easy and I have since realised that there is no way one can lead a successful life without God. Someone told me that these days there are only two ways of surviving-either through the traditional religion or through God. I have chosen to give my life to God,” said Farai.

The Dingatinga singer, who was accused of stealing money contributed by mourners at Cephas Mashakada’s funeral a few years back, added that Zimbabwe desperately needs God’s intervention.

“I am now regularly performing in rural areas, farms and mining areas and I can testify that people are struggling. People are even struggling to have a single meal a day and so how can you expect them to pay for a musical concert. The only solution now is God,” he said.

Farai is among an increasing number of secular musicians seeking divine intervention in charismatic churches particularly PHD Ministries and Emmanuel Makandiwa’s United International Family (UFIC) Church.

Khiama Boys front man Nicholas Zakaria, Orchestra Dendera Kings Central Committee leader Allan Chimbetu, Suluman Chimbetu and Alick Macheso frequent PHD Ministries while Leonard Zhakata and Peter Moyo just to mention a few attend UFIC.

Interestingly, Zakaria, who used to be nicknamed “Madzibaba” when he was still a member of a popular apostolic sect, no longer accepts the moniker. This may be due to the fact that Magaya — the leader of his new church-is locked up in a bitter feud with apostolic sects.
