St John's win CHISZ football tourney

HARARE - St John's College won the Under-16 boys CHISZ Football Tournament held at Peterhouse on Saturday.Westridge High, Lomagundi College, St George’s College, Peterhouse Boys School, Watershed and St John’s College battled for gold, with the latter coming out victorious after beating the hosts 3-1 in an entertaining final.

In Pool A, Peterhouse saw off Westridge 4-0 in their first game, then won their next game against Lomagundi 1-0 to finish on top of the Pool and book a semi-final spot with Watershed who finished second in Pool B.

St John’s topped Pool B after beating Watershed 4-0 in their first game before seeing of St George’s College 2-1 to book a spot in the semi-finals with a clash with Lomagundi who finished second in Pool A.

In the first semi-final, St John’s College beat Lomagundi 2-0 and the other semi finished 2-0 with Peterhouse emerging victorious after beating rivals Watershed, to set-up a final with St John’s College.

However, St John’s College would prove too strong for the hosts as they humbled Peterhouse 3-1 to walk away with a floating trophy and gold medals.

Lomagundi had to settle for bronze after winning the third place play-off clash with Watershed 2-0.

Former national team winger Edzai Kasinauyo, who was watching and selecting a team to tour Germany next month said he was impressed with the talent on show.

“The boys are talented and they need to be monitored and developed in the right environment so that they can make it to better leagues,” he said.

A total of 35 fledgling youngsters were chosen from the six schools that took part in the CHISZ tournament, where a final squad to tour Germany from August 17 to 29 will be selected.
