Zim win Davis Cup playoff

HARARE - Zimbabwe has taken an unassailable 3-0 lead to win the Davis Cup Euro-Africa Zone II play-off against Moldova following the victory by Courtney Lock and Mark Fyn in the yesterday’s doubles match.

Courtney Lock and Fyn beat the Moldova pair of Egor Matvieci and Andrei Soltoianu 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.

Zimbabwe had gone into yesterday’s match carrying a 2-0 lead following Benjamin Lock and Takanyi Garanganga’s wins on Friday against Dmitrii Baskov and Maxim  Bulat respectively.

Tennis Zimbabwe president Regis Bhunu was delighted by the team’s performance which means Zimbabwe will remain in the Davis Cup Euro-Africa Group II.

“I’m feeling great and the fans are also happy with the pair’s performance because we now remain in Group II.

“But we just want to say to those who are playing tomorrow (today), they must stay focused because we expect the match to be very competitive,” he said.

Today’s reverse singles matches which will see Garanganga taking on Baskov while Benjamin Lock square up against Bulat are now effectively dead rubbers.

Zimbabwe had to take part in this play-off after losing their Group II match against Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 in March.
