Trio dropped for final ODI

HARARE - Batsman Vusi Sibanda, all-rounder Sean Williams and seamer Brian Vitori have been dropped from Zimbabwe’s squad for today’s final One Day International against India at Harare Sports Club.

India have already sealed the ODI series after winning the first two matches by four and 62 runs respectively.

After today’s match, focus will turn to the two-match Twenty20 series. All matches are scheduled for Friday and Sunday at Harare Sports Club.

Opening batsman Sibanda has been dropped due to poor form, Williams sustained an injury to his right knee in Sunday’s defeat while Vitori has been rested to give other quicks game time.

Sibanda, the 31-year-old opener scored 20 runs from 35 deliveries in the first match and followed it up with only two runs from 13 deliveries in Sunday’s match.

Fellow opener Chamu Chibhabha made amends for his first match 3 (12) with a 100-ball 72 in the second match while number three batsman, Hamilton Masakadza with scores of 5 (9) and 34 (64) in the first and second match respectively survived the chop.

Mountaineers versatile batsman Roy Kaia has been picked in the 14-man squad for this morning’s match.

Givemore Makoni, the outgoing convener of selectors, announced the changes yesterday.

“We have picked a 14-man squad for the third and final ODI, Vusi Sibanda has been dropped, Sean Williams misses out due to a knee injury while Brian Vitori has been rested and Roy Kaia joins the squad for the first time in this series,” he said.

Zimbabwe bowling coach Douglas Hondo said the bowlers would continue to probe the Indian batsmen despite the match being reduced to a dead rubber.

“It’s been testing (the first two games) trying out combinations with the guys that have been in the squad who have been looking promising and on Sunday we saw (Neville) Madziva coming in, which was positive for the whole bowling squad,” he said.

“We just need to have our complete game; there are some areas that we are lacking like in the middle where we need to get a breakthrough.

“We have been working on that so once we get the full complement of the 50 overs it should be already but it is work in progress. We are also looking to concede less in the last 10 overs.

“We are still in the process of sorting out how we want to play so we just gonna (sic) be going through our processes just like what we have been doing in the first two matches, fine tuning and when we get the perfect mix of players then things will be alright.”

Zimbabwe 3rd ODI squad:Hamilton Masakadza, Regis Chakabva, Chamu Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura, Richmond Mutumbami, Sikandar Raza Butt, Malcolm Waller, Graeme Cremer, Prosper Utseya, Neville Madziva, Donald Tiripano, Chris Mpofu, Roy Kaia, Craig Ervine.
