Granddad jailed 20 years for rape

MASVINGO - A 68-year-old Gutu grandfather has been jailed for 20 years for raping his three-year-old granddaughter in a get-rich ritual.

The granddad was jailed by Masvingo magistrate Collet Ncube.

The grandfather, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, pleaded guilty to the charge.

He stunned the court when he said he committed the grievous crime after he was instructed by a traditional healer to be intimate with a minor as part of rituals to get rich.

It is the State’s case that sometime in January this year, the grandfather consulted a sangoma to solve some financial problems he was facing.

The sangoma then gave the man some muti and told him to go and get intimate with a female relative below the age of four years.

The grandfather then raped his three-year-old grandchild on several occasions when ever his wife was away.

The case came to light after the granddad had an altercation with his wife over conjugal matters.

He allegedly told his wife that he was no longer interested in being intimate with her because he was now being intimate with his granddaughter.

The revelations angered the wife, who reported the matter to the police, leading to his arrest. Medical reports confirmed that the minor was sexually-abused.

Magistrate Ncube said the man deserved a long jail term as he was a threat to minors and could ruin the lives of innocent girls.

She added that the lengthy jail term will serve as a lesson to other men inclined to abuse minors for whatever reasons.

The sangoma should be arrested and put in prison as an accomplice (Tomana). Just thinking aloud.
