Zim rugby girls impress

HARARE - Zimbabwe's Under-18 girls’ rugby team wrapped up their maiden tour to South Africa with a 19-0 win over South Western Districts at Glenwood High School in Durban yesterday.

The result was the side’s second win of the inaugural South Africa Rugby Union Under-18 Girls Week.

The Nsikelelo “Sykes” Sibanda- coached side had opened their campaign with a 12-7 victory over Eastern Province.

In that encounter the side trailed 7-0 going into the break but turned the tables in the second half to register a well-deserved 12-7 victory.

Zimbabwe suffered their first and only defeat against Border, going down 27-0.

Border built on their 17-0 halftime lead and managed to cross the try-line five times en route to putting the visitors to the sword.

Zimbabwe will, however, take heart from their performance given the tournament hosted the top Under-18 girls teams from in and around South Africa.

The Youth Week featured 16 teams and ran with an objective to grow women’s rugby and assist with development and scouting of players who could represent the national team in future.

Zimbabwe’s junior rugby girl’s players also had access to coaching from South Africa Rugby Union Youth training Centres to improve their skills.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s women senior rugby team will also be hoping to make their mark at the SARU Women’s Sevens Interprovincial tournament later in the year.
