Italian ref to handle Manyuchi bout

HARARE - the World Boxing Council (WBC) has picked an Italian referee to officiate next weekend’s Welterweight silver title fight between Zimbabwe’s Charles Manyuchi against Gianlunca Freazza set for Venice, Italy.

Highly-respected Italian referee Guido Cavalleri will stand in the middle during the bout.

It will not be the first time Cavelleri will be in charge of a bout involving a Zimbabwean.

In September 2013, the Bergamo-based official refereed the fight between Dereck Chisora and Edmund Gerber for the vacant EBU (European) Heavyweight title at the Copper Box Arena in London.

Manyuchi left for Italy yesterday for what could be the biggest fight of his career as he defends his WBC Sliver title.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, Zambia on Wednesday Chris Malunga, Oriental Quaries Boxing Promotion (OQBP) operations manager said they were not worried with the appointment of an Italian native official for the bout.

Apart from the Italian referee, the WBC also named Sergio Silvi among the three judges with the other two being Frenchman Robin Dolpierre and Marcos Vazquez of Spain.

Malunga also announced that the fight supervisor would be Italian WBC vice-president, Mauro Betti.

“This is not a matter of concern to Charles (Manyuchi) and the technical team, the boxer is in fine form and will employ a good strategy to ensure that he wins this one,” he said.
