Zimbabwe U17 lose to Griquas in SA

HARARE - Zimbabwe's Under-17 rugby team got their Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week off to a losing start after going down 24-17 to Griquas yesterday at the Izak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa.

Among the try scorers for the Jack Charsley-captained side were Jeff Makoni and Antoni Ciampi.

A conversion from Campbill Nyakudya and a penalty off the boot of Takudzwa Gamanya put the points on the board for Zimbabwe.

However, that was not enough to undo a spirited Griquas side, who had Reinhard Hayes and Willrich Delie diving over the whitewash, whilst Lynthen Barties did not put a foot wrong from the kicking tee.

Zimbabwe are yet to know their next opponents as the fixtures for the next days’ play are compiled on a ‘strength’ basis at conclusion of Day One results.

Meanwhile, in the Zimbabwe schools rugby fixtures Peterhouse had to dig deep to edge St John’s College 17-16 in a cliffhanger of a match on Saturday.

The Tigers of Prince Edward School beat old enemies in the form of the Dragons of St George’s College 31-14 in a Reunion encounter that did not really live up to expectations.

Lomagundi College compounded the woes of Gateway High School who have been at the receiving end of some heavy defeats this season.

The Chinhoyi-based school walloped Gateway 52-0 in a one-sided encounter.

Elsewhere, Midlands Christian School College accounted for Hellenic 29-24 in a tightly-contested match.
