Tennis Zimbabwe ups Davis Cup preps

HARARE - Tenniss Zimbabwe (TZ) has intensified preparations for the forthcoming Euro-Africa Zone Group II Davis Cup play-offs against Moldova set for Harare Sports Club next week.

In March, Zimbabwe suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Preparations are going on well; our players are participating in various tournaments,” TZ president Regis Bhunu told the Daily News.

“We are almost there in terms of fund-raising, we are only left with a small amount and I think we are going to meet our target.

“We are not scared of Moldova. I think Bosnia was a tougher opponent than Moldova; look Bosnia has three highly ranked players which I think makes them different from Moldova.”

Going into this tie Zimbabwe will pin their hopes on in-form Lock, who recently put up an impressive performance at Old Mutual Zimbabwe Futures tournaments.

In the first Zimbabwe F1 Futures tournament, the Florida State University student bowed out in the semi-finals going down to Evan Song of the United States a fortnight ago.

This was followed by another semi-final loss to South Africa’s Tucker Vorster in the second Futures tournament at the same venue.

Prior to Zimbabwe Futures tournaments, Lock clinched the Mozambique F1 Futures at Clube de Tenis de in Maputo.

Lock recorded the sensational win after he outclassed United States’ William Bushamuka 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
