Fire destroys Gono's property

HARARE - Former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor, Gideon Gono, is at his wits end after one of his houses went up in a blaze of fire yesterday, losing property worth more than $200 000.

The executive 5-bed-roomed double storey house with a thatched roof located a few metres from the home of Lunar Chickens’ grandparent breeder chickens, was gutted by fire at midday.

The fire also destroyed large swaths of land at the property.

According to Morgan Zulu, a senior manager at the property, three teams from the fire brigade responded quickly. They were still fighting the fire when the Daily News crew arrived around 3pm.

“You see, the house’s roof was thatched; it’s very difficult to put out such a fire with the wind blowing like this,” Zulu said.

Contacted for comment, Gono said: “The house that’s been burnt is just a few metres from our grandparent birds, the most valuable component of my integrated poultry farming programme.

“It remains a mystery that the birds were spared, thanks to the swift action of the Harare Fire Brigade. As to the cause of the fire, I cannot comment further because I have not been given the full report by my management or those who attended to the fire but I thank everyone who was involved in putting out the fire.”

Asked if he suspects foul play, the retired governor said; “Our destinies are determined before we are even born. Nothing is an accident. It was written before I was born that this incident shall happen so it has come to pass. Foul play or no foul play, it really doesn’t matter. Life goes on. I will dust up the ashes and move on to produce more chickens and food for our country.”

It is just the latest fire to gut the retired governor’s property after his chicken runs were recently razed to the ground in another fire.

An earlier fire in 2013 destroyed the Lunar Chicken breeding site, damaging equipment worth up to $50 000.

Gono stays in the vicinity of where the fire destroyed property. Two weeks ago, businessman Phillip Chiyangwa’s bedroom was gutted by fire at his mansion in Borrowdale.

Under competent management what happened to Chiyangwa's house should never be allowed to happen to any other property in Zimbabwe. Simply meaning a proper investigation to establish cause. Learn what needed to be done to avoid the fire and apply the knowledge to protect other properties in the country. It does not surprise though in Zimbabwe where important organisations are led by idiots this will happen again to somebody's house. Cry the beloved country.

Who built that house ? Was it "a land grab" ? The ancestors must have been unhappy. Zuma's private house has a "firepool" built with citizens' money.
