Blue Bulls demolish Junior Sables

HARARE - The Old Mutual Zimbabwe Under-14 rugby team received a baptism of fire in their Craven Week opener against a dominant Blue Bulls yesterday in White River, Mpumalanga.

The Junior Sables were steam rolled 40-0 through six unanswered tries in a one-side encounter the Godwin Pangeti coached side would quickly want to forget.

Since the fixtures were released, this first match was always going to be a David vs Goliath match-up since the Blue Bulls are one of the biggest franchises in South Africa.

The Tshwane-based side got their tries through man-of-the-match Zandre du Toit and Chris Schoombee, who both weighed in with a brace whilst Wonder Mkhonto and Pieter Venter powered over the whitewash with a try each.

Jooste Nel was on song with the boot, kicking over five conversions to complete the rout and live Zimbabwe licking their wounds.

The Munashe Mhere-captained will hope to quickly dust themselves up form this loss in their last two encounters at the age grade tournament that hosts some of the regions finest rugby talent.

The tournament is structured such that teams only know their first opponents.

The results of the first games then given tournament officials a better picture of the strengths of the sides on show and will go on to pair like for like.

The Junior Sables will take heart from the 27-15 warm up match win against a determined Ehlanzeni Districts Under-14 squad on Saturday.
