Mugabe flies out again

HARARE - Serial traveller, President Robert Mugabe yesterday flew out to Mozambique for the eastern neighbour’s 40th independence anniversary celebrations, while the country’s socio-political and economic crisis deepens.

This also comes as uncertainty in his government continues to rise following Information minister Jonathan Moyo’s ejection from Cabinet.

Meanwhile, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be acting president in his absence.

The Mozambique trip comes hot on the heels of another travel to Egypt and South Africa for the African Union summit.

Since the beginning of the year, Mugabe who is also the ceremonial chairperson of both Sadc and the African Union (AU), has spent more time in the air or in foreign lands than he has done in his own country which is faced with mounting political and economic problems.

Mugabe’s frequent jaunts, whose benefits are still to be seen, have gobbled millions of dollars this year alone, with the United States Department of State recommending that Mugabe’s Budget be made public in the department’s recent fiscal transparency report.

Reports said Mugabe was seen off at the Harare International Airport by Mnangagwa, Defence minister Sidney Sekeramayi, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda as well as other officials.
