Manyuchi ready for Frezza

HARARE - World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi is geared up for the defence of his title against Italian boxer Gianluca Frezza on July 18 in Italy.

Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions Manager Christopher Malunga said Manyuchi, who has been in camp for two months, was responding well to training and was physically fit.

Malunga added that both Manyuchi and Oriental Quarries have taken the fight serious to make sure that it takes place.

Manyuchi is facing 35 year old Italian, who has a record of 22 wins that includes seven knockouts, two draws and defeats.

Initially, the reigning Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year was billed to defend his title against Silverio Ortiz of Mexico in April but the bout was cancelled.

Ortiz pulled out of the fight due to unknown reasons opening the door for the Italian to challenge the Zimbabwean.

“WBC has already approved the move and the contract has been signed,” said Malunga when he announced the first.

“It is important for him (Manyuchi)  to start fighting boxers who are experienced and highly rated. Ortiz is also a good boxer but the response from his promoters has been very bad. We did not have any other choice but to withdraw him and go for Frezza.

At the moment, Frezza is a sparring partner to Francesco Acatullo, who is scheduled to fight Pasquale Di Silvio for the vacant Italian lightweight title on July 3.

The Manyuchi-Frezza bout is being arranged by Italian promoter Mario Loreni and will be staged at Sequals, Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
