Krog shines in Namibia

HARARE - Zimbabwe's 19-year-old golf sensation Stuart Krog won the second edition of the Windhoek Lager Africa Championship in Namibia over the weekend.

The former St George’s College student won the championship division while the duo of Pascall Mudzikisi and Clement Chimuti competed in the B and C divisions of the tournament played at Windhoek Golf and Country Club.

Krog won ahead of 25 other players from Seychelles, Uganda, Tanzania, Swaziland, Kenya, South Africa and Botswana and was awarded a Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket.

It was an even sweeter victory as the 19-year-old was youngest player in the championship division field, while South Africa had the oldest player at age 68.

Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) marketing manager Ian Stevenson told Nampa that the amateur tournament was mostly about pride as there is little financial compensation.

“The winner of an amateur event may not win any prize money, so this is purely for pride, for an individual pride for the country, and of course to put your name on the trophy,” Stevenson said.

The accolade is another feather to the cap of Zimbabwe’s reigning junior golfer of the year who could be making his way to Henderson State University after signing a letter of Intent to play golf at the liberal arts university located in, Arkansas, United States

The 19-year-old gave up his final year in high school to concentrate on golf and has since been reaping the rewards.

He recently won the amateur trophy at the 2015 Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open.

That saw him being the only amateur that made the cut at the country's premier tournament.

Krog also won the 2015 Masvingo Amateur Championship, was second at the 2014 All-Africa Junior Championship and was the 2014 Zimbabwe Junior Stroke Play champion.

Additionally, Krog was a bronze medalist All-Africa Youth Games in Botswana and was awarded Zimbabwe Junior Golfer of the year 2014.
