Spare a thought for Manyengavana

HARARE - Willard Manyengavana is arguably the most efficient football administrator in the domestic game judging by how he has transformed the Northern Region Division One League ever since he assumed office two years ago.

Manyengavana and his executive that also includes secretary-general Sweeney Mushonga, changed the face of previously less fashionable second tier division.

The former CAPS United team manager and PSL vice-chairman began his tenure by luring Japanese car company World Navi as the league’s title sponsors.

Manyengavana also enticed Walter Magaya, leader of the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, to bankroll a knockout tournament, the Yadah TV Cup.

Last season, the Northern Region successfully organised their end of year awards ceremony which saw Mushowani midfielder Zivanai Mhanda walk away with a car after he was voted the best player in the league.

At the start of the 2015 season, Manyengavana and his executive secured a deal with national broadcaster ZTV, who is now screening Northern Region matches live on television.

This was a first of its kind broadcasting deal for the second tier leagues in the country.

Manyengavana’s connections with Magaya even helped Zifa secure some grants for the various national teams’ assignments.

Despite all these achievements, Manyengavana was part of the eight Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) officials suspended on Monday for attempting to topple president Cuthbert Dube.

In the wake of his suspension, Manyengavana said:  “I have not have heard anything from Zifa yet. But in any case if they decided that is what is right for our football who am I to oppose them. In as far as I am concerned I have not done anything wrong.

“I was expecting to get suspension letters by now but there is nothing yet. I am still the Northern region chairman but if the papers comes through then I will step down. In football we will always meet.”

It has been said over and over again, many times, even by our own head of state, that if you plot a coup , make certain its successful, because the backlash of failure are aghast to cntemplate.
