Miracle as Zim thumps Malawi

HARARE - Notwithstanding the staggering incompetence of the Cuthbert Dube-led Zifa administration, coach Calisto Pasuwa’s brave Warriors were still able to dig deep yesterday and beat Malawi 2-1 in Blantyre in a crucial African Cup of Nations qualifier, sparking wild celebrations among success-starved Zimbabweans back home.

Goals by the South Africa-based duo of Cuthbert Malajila and Khama Billiat gave Zimbabwe the shock victory against a better prepared and organised Malawi, who were expected to easily maul the weary and dispirited Warriors.

This was after the Zimbabweans endured a gruelling 600 kilometre overnight journey from Harare to Blantyre by bus,a journey of more than 10 hours on one of Africa’s most taxing multiple cross-border roads.

Zimbabwe’s journey to Malawi looked in limbo last week when the Warriors legitimately refused to board their plane on Thursday after Zifa, which is being run by Dube and company like a rural tuck-shop, failed to pay the players their allowances.

It had to take the intervention of benevolent Prophetic Healing Ministries (PHD) leader Walter Magaya to bail out the national team by paying their allowances for yesterday’s match.

So shambolic were the preparations for the crucial encounter against the Malawians that Pasuwa was only able to announce his team on Tuesday following the belated intervention of the minister of Sport, Andrew Langa.

The Warriors, who have already been expelled by Fifa from the preliminary rounds of the 2018 World Cup after Zifa failed to settle payments owed to former coach Valinhos, were in serious danger of getting another Caf ban if they had failed to fulfil yesterday’s tie.

Despite the Blantyre victory, the Daily News on Sunday was yesterday inundated with calls from irate fans who demanded the immediate resignation of Dube and those in his executive who support him, saying that he was a danger to football.

“Well done to the Warriors but Cuthbert Dube and his cronies must go. They are abusing our players. Dube wanted us to lose this match,” said one caller who identified himself as Tapiwa Shumba from Gweru.

But we do have millionaires in Zimbabwe,

They did not win because they did something special. Billiat scored by mistake it was not his intention, and Malajila scored from a gifted mistake by Malawi defenders. Malawi played far much better than Zimbabwe, and i am even surprised they have fired Young Chimodzi for players mistakes. Grossly unfair

Signifant Watemwa you r such an ungrateful individual. The team wins and u still feel you have to discredit them because of how the scores came. I feel for your spouse and family, to have such a negative individual in the family, vari patight. well done Zim National Team. Well done Pasuwa, you are truly the man.

Tafadzwa - 15 June 2015

Watemwa is completely divorced from what football is all about. Football is all about taking full advantage of another team's mistakes to your own benefit. Any goal scored is out of another team's mistake. That's why its common to see players blaming each other for a goal scored against them. The Warriors really did us proud as a country especially considering that they were playing away from home.
