Mushekwi headlines Warriors squad

HARARE - Swedish-based striker Nyasha Mushekwi headlines the Zimbabwe squad named for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Group L opener against Malawi this weekend.

Mushekwi, has netted 10 goals in 13 appearances for Allsvenskan side Djurgadens, is part of the 19-man squad named by coach Calisto Pasuwa yesterday.

The team starts preparation for the match today before travelling on Thursday to Blantyre for the clash against that takes place at Kamuzu Stadium.

It was not clear whether the striker would be able to make it in time for the match since he just completed his first half of the season with the Allsvenskan club at the weekend.

“Players are expected to start trooping into camp today (Tuesday) and training begins tomorrow (Wednesday),” said Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela.

“We will announce their travel arrangements in due course. We would have wanted a longer period for preparations, but as we have always said, our plans are hampered by lack of financial resources hence Zifa is in dire need of government and corporate support.”

While the Warriors will only have one day of serious preparation today, Malawi have been gearing up for this match since last month.

Most of the players in the Flames squad took part in the Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup in South Africa last month.

Malawi also took on record African champions Egypt in an international friendly on Monday night which they lost 2-1.

The Flames will no easy pushovers considering the amount of preparation they have put in for the tie while Zifa has dithered with even announcing the squad.

The Warriors need a strong start in Group L which also includes Guinea and Swaziland if they are to make it Gabon 2017.

Only the group winners book a place at the tournament together with the two best runners up from the 13 pools.

Warriors squad: Bernard Donovan, Tatenda Makuruva, Blessing Moyo, Patson Jaure, Eric Chipeta, Teenage Hadebe, Justin Jangano, Ronald Pfumbidzai, Danny Phiri, Willard Katsande, Gerald Takwara, Wisdom Mtasa, Khama Billiat, Kudakwashe Mahachi, Marvelous Nakamba, Knowledge Musona, Nyasha Mushekwi, Mathew Rusike, Cuthbert Malajila
