The irony of Yogi's abuse

HARARE - Supporters are a fickle lot indeed and the behaviour of Dynamos fans in recent weeks gives substance to this notion.

DeMbare coach David Mandigora has received a lot of stick and abuse in recent weeks for his team’s performances.

With all the indignation the Dynamos fans have towards their coach one would think the Glamour Boys are a team fighting against relegation.

After the defending champions’ 0-0 draw with league debutants Tsholotsho at Rufaro Stadium, the rowdy fans waylaid the team outside the venue demanding Mandigora’s sacking.

It was the same theme at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday when the Glamour Boys were held 1-1 by rejuvenated Triangle.

Having succeeded Calisto Pasuwa, whose contract was not renewed at the end of last season, it was always going to be difficult for Mandigora’s second spell at the club to be easily sailing.

Pasuwa had led the Glamour Boys to four league titles on the row between 2011 and 2014.

Stepping into the shoes of a highly successful is never an easy task something which David Moyes can testify to after his failed rein at Manchester United following the resignation of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The abuse directed towards Mandigora is inexcusable considering that Dynamos are only in second place on the Castle Lager Premiership log standings.

After only 12 matches, Mandigora’s side have won six, drawn four and lost only twice leaving them with 22 points.

First-placed Chicken Inn are only four points ahead of DeMbare with more than 15 games to go before the season comes to an end in November.

Although he has a history with the club, Mandigora is still new into his new job and obviously he is still implementing his own methods.

It will take time for the players to adjust to the coach’s ways but what is telling is the fact the club remains competitive and is still in touching distance with the log leaders.

Mandigora’s record in his first 12 games is not any different to that of Pasuwa in his first 12 matches last season.

Under the Young Warriors coach, the Glamour Boys had won seven matches, drawn one and lost four matches to leave them with 22 points.

The only difference from Pasuwa’s side to the current side was the number of goals scored and those conceded.

Last season, DeMbare had scored 11 while conceding five. This term, the Glamour Boys have only netted nine and let in five goals.

The difference in goals scored was bound to be noticeable considering Mandigora has always being known to be a more defensive coach.

Mandigora’s teams have always been parsimonious with goals as the coach is usually content with 1-0 wins.

Even if you go back to the 2013 season, Pasuwa’s DeMbare was not setting the pitch alight as they also had 22 points in their first 12 matches.

Even after that slow start, the Glamour Boys went on to win the league title ahead of Highlanders and Harare City.

You have to go back to the 2012 season to find a stage when Dynamos had more than 22 points after their first 12 matches.

That season, Pasuwa’s side had an uncharacteristic fast start as they raked in26 points while plundering 21 goals in those first 12 matches.

Over the years, the quintessence of Dynamos’ play has always been grinding results while playing unattractive football.

With that approach, the Harare giants have dominated local football winning an unprecedented 21 leagues titles.

It surprising now to see the club’s fans hound Mandigora when he is simply continuing with the DeMbare tradition.

There is more to this than meets the eye! Even Pasuwa faced similar issues until he won his last title. I have a feeling that some of these comments come from individuals with a hidden agenda

Its like that at Dynamos, even if a coach is from planet Jupiter, they will always complain, what ever justification they have, the supporters always breath behind the coach's neck.Mr Yogi can only get compliments from the press even if he wins, not from these, soccer jihadists

Modern football is for young managers who are bringing new ideas and style of play to football. Yogi is old skool, the same nana Sunday Misheck Chidzambwa. These guys belong in the history of football...... Dembare should look for a young and ambitious coach.....
