Kwekwe wins Polytech cricket tourney

HARARE - Kwekwe emerged overall winners of the Polytechnics Cricket Tournament hosted by Harare Polytech at Old Hararians over the weekend.

The Midlands side finished runners-up in Pool B behind leaders Bulawayo in the four-team group while Harare topped Pool A that had five teams ahead of second-placed Bulawayo.

Kwekwe beat Masvingo in the first semi-final while Harare beat Masvingo to proceed to the finals of the tournament.

Pool A comprised of Bulawayo, Gweru, Msasa, Joshua Nkomo and host Harare with the B pool constituting of Kwekwe, Masvingo, Mutare and Kushinga.

The final, an eight-over encounter saw Kwekwe setting 75 for the loss of two wickets before their bowlers restricted Harare to 68/4 to win the match by seven runs.

Earlier, in the Colleges festival played at the same venue and hosted by Belvedere Teachers college, Hillside beat Marymount in the men’s final to win the championship. The teams were pooled in two groups A and B.

Pool A comprised of Bulawayo, Belvedere and Morgenster while the second pool comprised of Marymount, Hillside and Seke.

In the women’s category, Masvingo beat Madziva in the final.
