Mnangagwa jibe angers MDC

HARARE - The MDC, stung by a withering attack on its leader by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has come out guns blazing declaring it will scupper his presidential bid.

Mnangagwa taunted the MDC and Morgan Tsvangirai for their defeat in the 2008 elections and latest boycott of the impending by-elections.

But MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu yesterday dismissed the Zanu PF strongman’s jibe and characterised him as a brutal man.

“It simply proves that the man should never ever become president of Zimbabwe. He is intolerant, brutal and a threat to national unity and cohesion,” Gutu told the Daily News.

“We pray to God the Almighty that he should never ever take that man anywhere near the State house. Otherwise Zimbabwe will be totally doomed. You don’t expect those kinds of comments from a man who aspires to be head of State.

“We have total confidence in our ‘no reforms, no elections’ political campaign. The thousands of people who continue to attend our rallies are a clear testimony of the fact that the majority of the people of Zimbabwe appreciate the logic and reasoning behind our campaign. Why should we continue to sanitise Zanu PF’s electoral thievery?”

Mnangagwa, on Saturday bragged at a rally in Harare, that God was allegedly on Zanu PF’s side.

The Zanu PF strongman, who is sometimes referred to as the Son of God or Son of Man by his staunch supporters — among them Psychomotor minister Josiah Hungwe  claimed that his party was in God’s heart.

“Let me tell you this, God loves Zanu PF,” he said. “God gave us countries and we were given Zimbabwe.

“When we had won our independence, the British funded the MDC to remove us from power.

“In 2008, they almost removed us from power but God refused and said no,” Mnangagwa told party supporters in Harare’s Dzivaresekwa high density suburb.

“God intervened and we are still ruling. Look now we are going to win by-elections. God indeed loves Zanu PF.”

The MDC came within a whisker of forming the next government after winning the hotly-contested 2008 elections in which Tsvangirai beat President Robert Mugabe in the first round of the presidential poll.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) withheld the results of the ballot for six weeks, raising suspicions that the inordinate delay had allowed Zanu PF to manipulate the poll and deny Tsvangirai victory.

Tsvangirai subsequently pulled out of the ensuing run-off ballot, citing violence and massive intimidation, which left Mugabe to participate alone in a widely discredited election.

But Mnangagwa appeared oblivious to all this, going on to heap praise on God for having ‘‘intervened’’ and saving Zanu PF.

He tore into Tsvangirai for having refused to participate in the pending June 10, by-elections which came after the MDC withdrew its MPs from parliament after they joined a breakaway faction now known as the renewal team.

“Tsvangirai is going around saying ‘no reforms, no elections’. I wish to thank him for that. Let him boycott while we rule.

“I say let him continue boycotting while we rule. Continue with your ‘no elections, no reforms programme’ and we will continue ruling,” the VP said.

Mnangagwa continued with his mockery of the MDC, adding that the party had a penchant for splitting.

“There is one major difference between Zanu PF and MDC. Zanu PF fires while the MDC splits. Look now we have about five MDCs, MDC Tsvangirai, MDC Mutambara, MDC 99, and MDC Biti. So MDC splits and Zanu PF fires.

“We have remained intact but we fire rogue elements. And now look, the split in MDC has given us a chance to increase our numbers in Parliament,” he said.

mdc t ngaimbo nyarara. its a party that belongs to a dictator called morgan tsvangirai thats why it is suffixed a t for tsvangirai. the party has become his personal property. he can change the constitution at will. whoever opposes him, he will also purge. mdc t cannot be a better alternative. better biti who felt enough was enough and dumped the dictator.

I believer in democracy and for a long time did believe in the MDC, but they have continuously disappointed. Prayer is no strategy for any serious political party, I am sorry but please, you can not hedge your bets on prayer to have Munangagwa fail to be the next president. Put in place systems, and really get to know your opponent. Politics is rough, can be very dirty and in this case when you deal with ZANU-PF it can be down right fatal. For Gutu to say "We pray to God the Almighty that he should never ever take that man anywhere near the State house. Otherwise Zimbabwe will be totally doomed", is just a regrettable statement. Yes we all know they cheat, they steal and are violent, that is for us the masses to say but leaders in opposition should find solutions, expose the brutality with facts and figures. Find ways to get inside ZANU-PF as they did to opposition forces. Find data that can be presented with no possibility of dispute...

MDC T is finished. Mnangagwa should not bother about flogging a dead horse.

Danboy - 25 May 2015

So why bother himself about something which is finished ? Inside him he knows well the party is healthier than zanu and every sane adult people do not need to be told about that

why mdc t why not ndonga why not zanu people first . why not Maduku . why not Makoni , Ndumiso or ndu only Morgan and that tells you a lot about how zanu fear this man and is the only threat to their kingdom , Any election without his party is useless so are these by elections they are a heap of kaki

Diibulaanyika - 25 May 2015

Mnangagwa dont make noise. Meet the demands first and make the playing ground even then if u win, you can beat urself on the chest. You are not the politicians but murders!!

chamvari - 25 May 2015

mdc was strong before the splits; first was the ncube group which polarized party of bulawayo then the recent biti crew which has caused the donation of several parliamentary seats to zanu pf. mdc t gained ground over zanu post 1999 largely through protest votes. people were angered by zanu and revenged by backing mdc. the leaders of the party could not take advantage of that scenario. one wonders what more could be done to prop up this party more than what the people of zimbabwe have already done.

taurai - 25 May 2015

No reforms no elections", surely MDC is a joke, ZANU pf will go for election n win. I wander when will TsvangIrai and company learn. Iyondiyo team yemadofo

Mofree - 25 May 2015

Well if splits weaken political parties then zanu is the weakest of them all bcoz judging by the big split which has resulted in the creation of zanu people first , On top of that zanu is hated by three quarters of the population of this country bcoz of misery it has brought to them making it the weakest party that is only sitting on a time bomb . if mdc t is weak zanu would not even mention it at every gathering the way they ignore mavambo ,zapu , mdc ncube ,maduku and Biti .

"You don't expect those kinds of comments from a man who aspires to be head of State". VaGutu, when did Mnangagwa say he wants to become head of State? Maybe he told the MDC-T, but not the nation.

You see a rough carpenter fights with his tools . Cowards see leadership vacuum when it is clear we have good leaders in the country the only problem is the mbwendes they lead . No matter how good is a leader if he is leading a nation of amagwala he will look useless .A nation so scared of old limping donkey which can not even kick a sick dog . The nation which prefers to jump into crocodile infested limpopo river running away from a moving grave and seek refuge in SA . Even smallest countries in the continent stand up and solve their problems Burundians are doing that and they will rid of satan from their govt while we still wait for donkeys to have horns demety !!!!!

zanu pf yakafanana nezhou...I think E.D has much more clarity in respect of the situation on the Ground.MDC places its hopes on hopeless strategies. How can not participating in an election ever achieve anything.even if they boycott for the next century.....then what. This is an admission by the MDC that they are no match for zanu pf.cadit questio.the answer to the mystery why mdc will never rule is within the domain of realpolitik.

Well mdc has no history of destroying this country even killing people like zanu . So what ever some cio can try to lie to us mdc has committed no crime in this country and they have right not to take part in useless elections which will never create 2m jobs . Only a few cio are still hallucinating here but thank god their tricks are easy to see and they are old fashioned like winning election by threatening you opponent supporters .

Diibulaanyika - 26 May 2015

even if mdc boycott elections zanu pf will win and they rule.so that strategy does not work they should have to find other measures which are more workable and implement them

If you have strategies why don't you implement them or form your party and beat mdc it seems you have a lot of strategies then you can be president of this country instead of making noise like clueless Munangagwa

ZPF kurwadziwa nedecision ye MDCt yekuti No Reforms No Elections. This decision is spot on!Zpf wanted to use MDCt to legitimise its perennial electoral frauds.MDCt must not waver on this one.If Zpf is to rule alone as Mnangagwa says let it be and may they revive the comatose economy and the rule of law.Its not a secret that Zpf reelelects itself into power all the time.Ngaataure zvaanoda mudhara uyu bt ngaazive kuti iye ne zpf yake ndoovauraya nyika and munhu wese ane pfungwa dzakakwana anozviziva izvozvo.Zpf yakatanga kuuraya nyika iri yega from 1980.MDC yakadiwa nevanhu 1999 vanhu vaona kuti zpf haina dhiri.Saka ED anotaurei nezvekutonga nyika?
