Sibanda loses in final

HARARE - Zimbabwe junior tennis player Mehluli Sibanda lived up to expectations at the just ended Namibia 18 and Under ITF tournament boy’s category at Central Tennis Club Jeanine and Suzelle Davin Str in Windhoek.

Sibanda reached the finals before going down to Damon Kesaris of South Africa 6-1, 6-0.

In the semi-finals, Sibanda struggled to overcome South Africa’s Joshua Howard Tripp 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to progress to the finals.

On his way to the semi-finals, the 15-year-old beat another South African Siphosothando Montsi 7-5 6-2 in the quarter-finals to book a place in the last four.

Also in the second and third round, the Zimbabwean put up a spirited performance to overcome South Africa’s Daniel Kotze  6-3, 6-0 and  Leon Olivier 6-1 6-4 respectively.

Another Zimbabwean Muzingaye Sibanda put up an impressive performance after reached the quarter final stage before knocked out by Joshua Howard-Tripp of South Africa 6-2, 6-1.

However, many Zimbabwe junior tennis players in the boys category found the going tough as they bowed out in the early stages of the tournament.

Locals Michael Zhou and Jason Chigaazira dropped out in the first round while Ngonidzashe Makambwa, Mark Chigaazira and Batsirai Saurombe crsshed out in the second round.

In the girls’ category, Rufaro Chirewa reached the quarter-finals before going down to Nadine De Villiers of South Africa 3-6 6-3 7-5.

Other Zimbabweans in the girls’ category, Beverly Matsiwe, Karen Machisa and Tanaka Chakanyuka failed to impress at the tournament after they bowed out in the early stages.
