Chipongo makes strides in US

HARARE - Zimbabwe national cycling champion Bright Chipongo is currently racing in the United States of America under Team Mike’s Bikes in San Francisco, California.

The Harare Cycling Club rider was issued with a Category One (Cat 1) racing licence becoming only one of the few if not the first Zimbabweans to get this type of recognition.

The 27-year-old cyclist finished in position 44 out of 74 starters in his maiden race for Mike’s Bikes, a “respectable” finish according to Jose Dias, Harare Cycling Club chairman.

“Bright raced his first USA Cycling event Cat 1 on the 9th of May in the Berkeley Hills Road Race, Richmond, California,” Dias told the Daily News.

“I believe he did very well as he finished the race and achieved a respectable result. I believe he is the first Zimbabwean to be issued a Cat 1 racing licence from USA Cycling and the first Zimbabwean to race for a USA Cycling team.”

Andrew Donaldson, Cycling Zimbabwe president said it was quite a big achievement for one to acquire the Cat 1 licence and race in the US.

“It’s quite an important privilege and very difficult to acquire such kind of licence to race among the best in the USA,” he said.

“Bright’s getting the international cycling exposure which can only be good for Cycling Zimbabwe because you cannot get such an exposure when you racing at home.”
