Warriors begin Cosafa campaign

HARARE - The Zimbabwe national football team begin their Cosafa Senior Cup Group A campaign this evening against Mauritius at Moruleng Stadium in South Africa.

Kick-off is 5:30pm.

The Warriors need to top the group that also includes Namibia and Seychelles if they are to qualify for the quarter-finals where defending champions Zambia lie in wait.

“We are expecting to reach the quarter finals, I am confident that we will achieve our targets because we have a good squad,” Warriors captain Danny Phiri said earlier this week.

“We want to get out of the pool and get into the quarterfinals where Zambia awaits. That will help us in trying to bring back the confidence of our supporters as a national team.

However, Phiri was quick to warn his team against underestimating their opponents in the tournament.

“We have to approach these games with positive mind, as you know there is nothing obvious in football and every game has its own merits and if anyone has any sense of complacency, then football is not the sport for them.”

After the Mauritius game, the Warriors, who are under assistant coach Saul Chaminuka, will take on Seychelles two days later at the same venue.

The Warriors will conclude their group campaign with a clash against Namibia on May 21.

Today: Namibia v Seychelles (3pm), Zimbabwe v Mauritius (5:30pm)
