Mhaka wins Pretoria Classic

HARARE - Zimbabwean bodybuilder, Simba Goodwin Mhaka won the Pretoria Classic Male Aerobic Fitness Championship in South Africa over the weekend.

The Muscle Mania Zimbabwe fitness physique holder came first in a pool of 18 athletes and is set to represent South Africa at the Nabba World Championships on June 20.

Mhaka looks set to follow in the footsteps of bodybuilder, Victor Hungwe, who rose to fame under the South African banner which took him to Naples, Italy in December two years ago.

“I’m so excited about my exploits in South Africa. For me this is just the start of my fitness career in bodybuilding,” he said.

“This just shows that there’s lots of light at the end of that tunnel. I would however, want to add more strength so that I will be more competitive at the worlds in France.”

Mhaka however, challenged the local bodybuilding body, National Federation of Zimbabwe Bodybuilding and Fitness (NFZBBF) to affiliate with more international federations for the benefit of the local sport.

“Our country should register with international federations such as NBBA, WBFF, IFBB so that the local athletes will have an opportunity to compete in these competitions,” he said.

“It will be nice if we could have a federation NABBA Zimbabwe but I’m happy that we already have the IFBB which is led by Victor Hungwe,” he said.

Mike Mvenge, Mhaka’s manager said lack of sponsorship almost ruined the athlete’s chances of competing in South Africa.

“We have been training for the last three months at Planet Fitness at the Show grounds. He was training twice a day, a-two-hour morning session and the aerobics in the evening,” he said.

“We were short of sponsors and we had to hustle in order to make the trip a reality. We had to deal with the vegetables and traditional dishes as supplements.

“But looking ahead to France, we would want him to have some supplements to make his body a bit bigger but in terms of results I’m confident that he’s guaranteed a top-five placement.”

Meanwhile, NFZBBF spokesperson, Quiet Shangai said the national association was proud of Mhaka’s achievements.

“Simbarashe carries a world-class physique in his division, we are very happy with his achievements, he was cleared for the event and arrangements can be done for him as far as his participation in France is concerned,” said Shangai.
