Late penalty saves Bosso

BULAWAYO - A last minute penalty by substitute Gabriel Nyoni saved the day for Highlanders as they salvaged a 1-1 draw here against Harare City.

Bosso were on the verge of losing their third straight home match but were handed a lifeline when Tendai Samanja handled inside the box in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Nyoni converted from 12 yards to give under fire coach Bongani Mafu a lifeline.

It was the second penalty the home side had been awarded. City midfielder Benson Maglasi handled inside the box but Ariel Sibanda missed the spot kick in the 66th minute.

By that time, Bosso were already trailing the Sunshine Boys, who had scored through a wonderful header from William Madondo in the 27th minute.

Talent Chandapihwa made a solo run on the left side and beat one defender before sending in an inviting cross.

The cross was met by the unmarked Madondo, who headed the ball to the far right of the diving Sibanda.

After the match Mafu said: “I liked the spirit we had today. The boys showed tremendous effort and willingness to win the match. We are struggling to get goals. We need a bit of luck.”

City coach Taurai Mangwiro was disappointed by his team for conceding a late penalty.

“It was a good game but I think we deserved to win the match. It is unfortunate the circumstances we conceded the goal. We had done enough to win the game,” he said.

“I am proud of my team. We are really doing well as a team. We are right on track and one day we will come good.”
