PSI uses theatre in campaign

HARARE - The Ministry of Health and Child Care in conjunction with Population Services International has resorted to the use of theatre in mobilising people for male circumcision in Masvingo Province.

The PSI intensified its male circumcision campaigns during school holidays as youths are part of the targeted group.

The Daily News has learnt that PSI used to face resistance in mobilising targeted groups for male circumcision programmes in some districts in Masvingo before roping in popular Sabhuku Vharazipi actors.

“There is quite a great change in the number of people attending male circumcision programmes since the engagement of Sabhuku Vharazipi actors.

“The comedy-drama Sabhuku Vharazipi appeals most to our targeted audience especially in all districts of Masvingo hence the boom in the number of people attending circumcision programmes,” said a health official.

Sabhuku Vharazipi actors are scheduled to perform about 50 shows in Masvingo mobilising people for male circumcision programmes.

Wellington Chindare who plays the role of Chairman in the popular community theatre is happy with the positive response the group is getting in their home area.

“The response we are getting here in Masvingo is encouraging, now people are piling pressure on us to release Sabhuku Vharazipi 3.

“However, we are not at liberty to reveal the exact dates we are going to release our next production because of piracy.

“We have uploaded clips of Sabhuku Vharazipi 3 on Youtube to test the waters,” he said.

The Masvingo-based group comprises Chindare and his wife Kumbirai Chikonye who plays the role of Mbuya Mai John and David Mubayiwa who plays the role of Sabhuku Vharazipi.
