Yogi seeks first Uhuru cup

HARARE - David ‘Yogi’ Mandigora steps into the National Sports Stadium this afternoon to face FC Platinum in search of an elusive first Independence Cup trophy as Dynamos coach.

Mandigora, who returned to Dynamos for a second spell, having guided the Harare giants to their first league title in a decade back in 2007 has not won the Uhuru Cup during his time as the Glamour Boys coach.

The 1980 Soccer Star of the Year only won the competition as a player twice in 1983 and 1984.

His first tenure at DeMbare was in 2006 during which he guided the team to a league championship in 2007 and an African Champions League semi-final in 2008.

Dynamos have won the Uhuru Cup seven times (1983, 1984, 1990, 1995, 2004, 2010 and 2013) since its inception in 1980.

Yogi has a chance to lift his first Uhuru cup this afternoon. The Glamour Boys will be looking for revenge against the Zvishavane-based side after losing to the same opponents last year.

Mandigora declared his charges ready for the final following their triumph over ZPC Kariba in the semi-final on Wednesday.

“Now that we are in the final, we are ready to register a positive result,” he said.

The Glamour Boys are currently enjoying good form having won four of their opening five matches in the league.

Platinum booked their place in today’s final after edging CAPS United 6-5 on penalties after the two teams were tied 0-0 after full time at Mandava Stadium.

After a rather slow start to the 2015 league season, the platinum miners are not taking any chances in their bid to defend the Uhuru Cup they won last year after beating DeMbare 3-0 on penalties.

Norman Mapeza’s men were knocked out of the African Confederation Cup after losing 5-2 on aggregate to Tanzanian giants Young Africans.

A draw with league novices Dongo Sawmill and defeats to CAPS United and Chicken Inn have also dented Platinum’s league campaign.

That lack lustre show in the league campaign has left them in an unfamiliar 10th position on the log table.

It is against this background that the platinum miners seek to appease their fans by successfully defending the Uhuru Cup.

Meanwhile, the third place play off between ZPC Kariba and CAPS United will take place at White City in Bulawayo this afternoon.

The Castle Premiership (PSL) has suspended this weekend’s fixtures to pave way for the Uhuru Cup.
