'I will take arts to Parly'

HARARE - Music promoter and Mutare businessman, Esau Mupfumi says he will bring the arts and music issues to Parliament if he is to win in the June 20 by-elections.

Mupfumi won against four other rivals in his Zanu PF party’s primary elections last week, giving him the ticket to vie for the Member of Parliament (MP) position for Dangamvura-Chikanga constituency.

“Ndirikutoda kuendesa magitare ikoko (I will take music and the arts to Parliament).

If you look at what is happening in Parliament right now, the arts are being ignored. My groundwork was already done through arts promotion, and people know me through that. I meet about a 1 000 people every week, which other MP does that? I promoted Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo and others — all over the country I am known for music,” he said.

Mupfumi contested for the seat following MDC’s recalling of MP Arnold Tsunga and others for joining the MDC renewal team.

The Pick n Save proprietor said if anything, this new development will make him one of the best MPs in the country.

“I will still continue arts promotions; in fact it is the arts that brought me closer to the people. An MP’s job is to interact with constituents, and I have always been close to them through arts promotions.

“People always complain that MPs are never available, that when they finish their seating they stay at hotels and fly to South Africa the following day for shopping.

“Well, I will be different; I will come back to my constituency and do what I know best, promote the arts. I have always interacted with them through arts and will keep it that way as it is the people that selected me.”

Mupfumi is not new to politics. “I have been in politics for the past 25 years, and I am a member of the Zanu PF Central Committee so I am not new to politics. I believe it is just my time.”

He added that there were squabbles when they started, but it was just a matter of internal party issues.

“When I contested for the primary elections there was a lot of bad-mouthing, I guess you can attribute it to in-house conflicts. Panemashefu anenge aine vanhu vavo, but the people on the ground spoke, by choosing me. So I will not be deterred but follow the will of the people.”

who needs Mupfumi for an MP. This guy who does not pay his workers, abuses them especially conductors, a liar who even lied to people of dangamvura chikanga that he donated an ambulance in 2008 yet it was used to abduct and kill MDC activists. Munhu uyu haiti kana kahwani. he is most likely to lose even if he will be the lone contestant. hapana anpmuda
