Pre-Open Classic tees off

HARARE - After months of inactivity local golfers finally get a chance to stretch their muscles before the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open gets underway on April 9.

Local golfers will this morning take part in the 2015 Pre-Open Classic at Royal Harare Golf Club hoping to get in shape for the country’s premier golf event that has been dominated by South Africans in recent years.

Over 50 professionals have entered for the Pre-Open Classic 36 holes stroke play which has a prize fund US$10 000.

“Entries have closed and we have a good field with local based players as well as the likes of Ryan Cairns, Mark Williams, Greg Bentley and Sheldon Steyn who have been playing on the Sunshine Tour,” Zambezei tour said in a press statement.

“In addition we have received entries from over 10 South Africans. The event has attracted all these players as it is a perfect practicing opportunity in preparation for the 2015 Zimbabwe Open which tees off next Thursday but preceded by the Pre-Qualifier to be held on the Monday April 6 2015.”

At least 137 professional golfers from different tours around the world have so far entered for the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open.

The golfers as well as qualifying amateurs will be battling for a piece of the 1.8 million rand winners’ purse.

Since 2001, the event has been dominated by South African golfers and this year may not be an exception given the inactivity of the Zambezi Tour.
