And then they were four!

HARARE - Zimbabwe Rugby Sevens yesterday progressed to the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Sevens 12-team qualifier tournament to set up a potentially explosive date against Spain.

University of Johannesburg student athlete Hilton Mudariki ran in a brace to help the Cheetahs power past Brazil 24-14 in the quarter finals.

The result essentially means Daniel Hondo’s side is two wins away from securing World Rugby Sevens core status, a feat they have failed to accomplish for several years now.

But in opponents Spain, they face a side that is full of confidence having got to this stage of the competition without losing a match.

The European side comes into today’s semi-final as favourites, having edged the African side 10-0 in a pool game earlier yesterday.

Zimbabwe only qualified to the knock out stages as the highest placed runner ups but they will be fancying their chances of going all the way having come to so near to core status.
