Touts get 8 months for stripping woman

HARARE - Two touts who stripped a woman naked at Fourth Street bus termini will spend eight months in prison.

Marvellous Kandemiri and Blessing Chinodakufa were sentenced to one year in prison before magistrate Renikah Dzikiti suspended four months on condition of good behaviour.

Dzikiti said the convicts’ conduct was diabolic and barbaric leading to the traumatisation of the complainant.

“The complainant was so traumatised that it took her two weeks to report the matter. We can never know the depth of her trauma,” she said.

“This offence is on the increase and the culprits are usually never caught. Had it not been for the video which was shot on that day, this matter could have been swept under the carpet.”

Dzikiti added that there was need to deliver a sentence that would deter like-minded individuals from committing similar offences.

Prosecutor Kudzai Chigwedere said a custodial sentence would restore confidence to society that women can still walk freely and enjoy their freedom.

However, Nathaniel Chigoro, who represented Kandemiri, said it was unjust for the two to suffer for an offence that was committed by more than 40 people.

“Clearly, this court is not like the God of the old testament who punishes children for the sins of their ancestors.

“According to the video this offence was committed by more than 40 people but only two people are being punished,” said Chigoro.

The State proved that on December 12 last year Chinodakufa and his accomplices started booing at the complainant.

They reportedly advanced and pulled her dress and underwear exposing the complainant’s body.

The complainant later managed to run to a nearby kombi but the accused persons blocked her and closed the doors.

When the complainant got into another kombi, Chinodakufa and his accomplices followed and pulled her out of the vehicle causing her to fall on the ground.

The convicted persons continued harassing the complainant by calling her a prostitute and pulling her dress.

They got hold of her legs and pulled her out of the vehicle causing her to fall down.

The complainant later managed to escape and got into another kombi where the driver and conductor asked for $2 to assist her to leave the scene.

Chinodakufa and Kandemiri were arrested after a leaked video footage capturing the drama went viral on social media networks.

Learned magistrate, is this the maximum sentence? I think this is a very light punishment considering the harassment suffered by this lady. People have become used to barbaric treatment having been subjected to the same by ZANU PF. The defence is clutching at straws, these were the people who were caught and there should be punished. If the other group is caught, they should suffer the same fate until all of them have been accounted for.

i feel putting these unscrupulous youngsters in jail is further worsening the situation as they are likely to gang-up with hard-cores and learn dangerously.I think basing on their age they should be confined to tight community service where they are humiliated and get a taste of their own recipe.

This is a good start, thank you magistrate Dzikiti. But the sentence is too low. Make it 5 years. In Europe women are well protected. Ukabata zamu remurungu, be guaranteed kupinda mujeri.

You will always get those who try to turn it political like Mahwani what of mdc where a pregnant woman was thrown from a bus, petrol poured over her and she was burnt alive. Or the entire families including babies that were murdered on thw farm next to the Harare South Golf Club and sadza pu in their mouth and eye sockets - in the morning Vote MDC attached to the boundary fences. You see we are all capable of turning things political- don't throw stones........
