Madzore faces prosecution

HARARE - Former Dzivaresekwa MP Solomon Madzore is facing prosecution over charges of calling President Robert Mugabe a “limping donkey”.

Madzore however, filed a Constitutional Court application, seeking stay of prosecution prompting Bindura magistrate Elisha Singano to stay his criminal proceedings pending the determination of the Constitutional Court application.

However, Madzore failed to file heads and defaulted court on Wednesday resulting in prosecutor Innocent Muchini applying for the dismissal of his request, a factor which would result in the resuscitation of his criminal proceedings before the magistrates’ court.

According to Zimbabwean law, it is a criminal offence to say anything that creates feelings of hostility, cause hatred, contempt or ridicule of the country’s president. “Zimbabwe is not a monarchy and certainly the President is not a deity who cannot be criticised. We are entitled to hold our leaders to account whether or not such exercise will result in people hating, ridiculing or feeling contempt towards them,” Madzore said in his constitutional application.

The former MDC youth leader allegedly insulted Mugabe during an MDC rally held at Mushumbi Pools Business Centre in Guruve in April, 2013.

He is accused of labelling Mugabe a “limping donkey, who is making it difficult for Morgan Tsvangirai (former prime minister) to rule properly in the (then) unity government”.

I think as People we need to uphold our morals and live up to our cultural and expectations. We do not insult an elder and worse off an old man the age of our grandfathers. So calling an old man all sorts of names does not make us people at all

Our Hon. President has been marketed as a super human being--far above common mortals. He is above the law of the land, above the laws of natural health - the nature of his illnesses can' t be made public. He and his family have been given deity status. First family has become an unsavory term due to the uncomely behavior of this "ruling family". So to the vast majority of the population the President is a caricature of a human being thus people like Madzore only have figures of speech to describe him. Figures of speech add richness to our culture and instead of stoning people who have run out of words to describe a person once a tower of morality and courage, we must sympathize with them as they have nothing left but great disappointment in their former hero.
