Tsvangirai visits Dzamara family

HARARE - Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday visited the family of abducted pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara and insisted that a desperate and panicking Zanu PF was behind the 35-year-old former journalist’s much-condemned disappearance.

Tsvangirai said Dzamara had been taken in broad daylight by people who were clearly law enforcement agents, and who had promptly gone on to arrest and “handcuff” the fearless critic of President Robert Mugabe.

The former prime minister said Dzamara, who has been missing for three weeks now, should be released immediately, particularly since the High Court had since ordered the State to find him.

“The whole nation is disturbed about the whereabouts of Dzamara. Up to now no one knows where he is but the State must know and must release him,” Tsvangirai said after spending some time with the family at their Glen Norah home.

“The State should be held responsible. Let’s also hope nothing unforeseen happened to him.  We are in solidarity with his family and hope that God will have the final say. The family is very much distressed,” Tsvangirai added as he spoke to the gathered media.

A barber, who cut Dzamara’s hair on the fateful day of his abduction, also told Tsvangirai yesterday that the people who whisked him away had openly said that they were law enforcement agents.

And as the mystery surrounding the fate of the democracy activist deepens, a columnist in the State-controlled media, Nathaniel Manheru — widely believed to be Mugabe’s spokesperson George Charamba — claimed at the weekend that the MDC had engineered Dzamara’s disappearance, without giving details.

Dzamara’s wife Sheffra and his mother looked terribly traumatised as the MDC leader narrated their harrowing story.

Asked about the accusation from Manheru, the veteran trade unionist said this was not possible as the MDC “is actually the victim since its member was arrested”.

“It is very unfortunate for anyone to claim that because that is a mockery of the victim and justice, as the victim is now being accused of manipulating the situation. Why?

“This is not a joke. What if this had happened to you?  What would we want to achieve from that?” Tsvangirai asked.

But according to Manheru, the MDC, by allegedly being complicit in Dzamara’s disappearance, was seeking to bring back Zimbabwe under the international spotlight.

“They will most probably keep him away for a while, spirit him into exile like they did with another such, a few years ago. Or at worst, they kill him, to make a desperate point.

“Well, let them know that to do the worst is to shed blood needlessly, given that there are no takers anymore. All eyes are now trained on Zanu PF, not for blame, but for the future which the West wishes is post-Mugabe,” Manheru said.

But the barber, who has asked not to be named for fear of being abducted or harmed, said Dzamara had been handcuffed and force-marched into a white vehicle after being accused of being a thief.

“I have been his barber for a long time. When they came here the men initially said they were looking for Telecel airtime and I told them we didn’t sell any. He then said ‘tirikutsvaga mbavha yedu’  (We are looking for a thief) and grabbed one of our clients before turning to Dzamara,” the barber said.

He added that when the men identified Dzamara, they accused him of cattle rustling, went on to handcuff him, and force-marched him to their vehicle that was marked AAB 2, with the other part of the number plate folded.

A visibly-worried Tsvangirai said it was sad that an innocent citizen could disappear in broad daylight just like that.

“It is only the State that can arrest someone and that carry handcuffs. There is no doubt the State is aware of the whereabouts of Dzamara. They must produce him immediately,” Tsvangirai said.

Civil society organisations (CSOs) have also concluded that the manner in which Dzamara was abducted had the fingerprints of the State.

According to them, many people have disappeared in similar fashion since the Matabeleland and Midlands massacres of the early 1980s when civilians dreaded a “knock on the door at night”.

Haa Zanu pf yakaoma arume. Kuramba zvinhu zvavakagarira pasi and wasting tax payers money. Kana Makamuuraya just bring his body. I curse all the people who masterminded the disappearance of Itai Dzamara. To Mugabe and Munangangwa may this year be the worst year in your lifes may peace depart from your homes and work place, May God strike you with a dreaded sickness that will eat you alive

Zanu pf is a true satanic enterprise , galloping innocent blood for its wicked survival and fortunes, we demand Dzamara dead or alive. Just return him or else you will face the wrath of God

we are in great anguish when an innocent democrat who is fighting for the liberation of his beloved nation from the wicked hypocrites regime is missed in such a despotic mystery. God will surely intervene or else he will became our Zimbabwean CheGuevara, posing a more dangerous threat after missing

Sizzle - 24 March 2015

@Sizzle, I agree with you. But let us just hope that they don't do the unthinkable. if the nation is grieved because of his disappearance what about his wife and children?

@Sizzle, a wish is a shadow of a prayer. In your prayer, you hope that they have not killed him. The truth is that Zanu-PF is has long morphed There is no doubt that this is Mnangagwa's hand-work . This is the the man who heads JOC. Nothing of this nature takes place without him sanctioning or being briefed. This is the same man who led to over turned 2008 vote where Mugabe lost dismally and led a scorch earth campaign to abduct and kill those they thought to lead the opposition grass route leadership. Ian Smith used to do the same. Do you remember the late Edison Sithole? He was abducted by Ian Smith's government and most probably his body was dissolved in nitric acid. Zanu-PF government did this many times over in 2008. There is no much difference between Ian Smith and Zanu-PF regimes. In fact we are in a worse situation at this point. The Rhodesia Front Government of Ian Smith was stopped by sons and daughters of this country. The Zanu-PF mafia leadership will not stop killing whenever they fill threatened. My country man we have to make a resolve to bring this to an end. Nobody will come to aid unless we stand up and put stop to this!

@Sizzle, thank you for contribution. A wish is a shadow of a prayer. In your prayer, you hope that they have not killed him. The truth is that Zanu-PF is has since morphed from a liberation movement into Mafia mob cult. This was an evil art of casting intimidation and fear to the population of Zimbabwe. Zanu-PF is daring us not to oppose its authority even in its ruinous management of this country. There is no doubt that this is Mnangagwa's hand-work . This is the the man who heads JOC. Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the change that we seek - Baraka Obama- Food for thought.

Mbareboy - 24 March 2015

Does no one in ZPF realise the gravity of their sins like kidnapping before God's eyes. In the bible a kidnapper was to face death for his crime. Zimbabwe's soil runs red with the blood of its people. All zpf have done is war against their own people with rgm heading up that war. Instead of building a nation they have destroyed a nation. Does mnangagawa not Will be judged as well. I am telling you all to repent because if you do not you will of the wrath of God and you will remember the many warnings you have had and ignored!
